Leinster Area Rugby Blitz

Over a dozen teams participated in a Leinster Area Rugby Blitz at the High School recently.  The High School fielded a junior and senior team with both squads putting in great performances throughout the day.  It was a lot of fun and the players had a chance to sample the excellent facilities that we enjoy at HSD.

Form 2 French Trip

Early in March our French class went into Dublin city to visit the Alliance Française.  The aim of the Alliance Française is to promote French culture as well as to provide a space for intercultural exchanges between Ireland and the cultures of the French-speaking world.  We toured the Library and took part in some activities there.  We also heard about the building and what it is used for.  We had lunch in the restaurant and left feeling that it had been a really lovely excursion.  Nous reviendrons!

Form 1 Rugby Tour

The excitement levels were high as we boarded the bus for the 3-hour journey to Cork for our match against Presentation Brothers College.  When we arrived we discovered that Presentation had only brought 14 players so we divided the match’s halves between our two teams.  We ended up beating Presentation 35–33.   The hotel that we stayed in was amazing and we all loved it.  After dinner together we headed out to the Ireland vs France U20 game. The atmosphere was great and the match was brilliant.   Next morning we feasted on an impressive buffet breakfast of hash browns, sausages, eggs, rashers, black and white pudding, cereals and much more.  We were all well fed getting onto the bus for the ride home.  Naturally, half way back we were all starving so we stopped off at a service station and bought ice creams and drinks.  Then when we got back to the school where parents were there to pick us up.  The tour was brilliant!

Ireland International Rugby Excursion

Following the success of the recent HSD Leinster rugby blitz a group of our keenest players attended the Six Nations Ireland vs France Womens' match at Donnybrook Stadium.  Despite a disappointing result for Ireland we had a great evening singing songs and cheering the team along.  As always the experience was made especially exciting as we were in the company of Ireland players and HSD coaches Ms Deacon and Emma Murphy (HSD, 2008-14).

Royal Charter Anniversary

This week 350 years ago Charles II empowered Erasmus Smith to found a number of Grammar Schools in Ireland. The High School is the last remaining school founded under that charter.  Pupils in Form 2 were inspired to create these evocative portraits of the monarch by the historic anniversary.

Shrove Tuesday

Pupils in Form 1 enjoyed trying their hand at pancake flipping recently in Home Economics.

Form 1 Maths Projects

Pupils in Form 1 have been studying statistics.  Each group came up with a significant question that they wanted to find the answer to.  We surveyed two Form 1 classes on various questions.  Each group had 4 individuals in it.  When we had asked our questions and gathered all our data we created a poster to display our findings.  We used bar charts, pie charts, and trend graphs along with pictures and a conclusion to clearly display our data.

Many thanks to The HSD Parents' Association for their kind donation to the Habitat for Humanity team who will be heading to Vietnam at Easter.

Ireland U16 Hockey Selection

Congratulations to Ben Whelan who was selected to compete with the Ireland U16 hockey squad against England; he also competed with the squad in matches against Spain, England, Germany, Belgium, and The Netherlands during the Six Nations Tournament.  We wish our pupil every success as he competes for further honours at international level in the 2018-19 season.
