You are invited to the FNHA and BC Patient Safety & Quality Council cultural safety and cultural humility webinar action series! Twelve webinar events will take place over the next year to encourage participation, learning, self-reflection and positive change among BC's healthcare professionals.

The series will support development of tools and skills on how to be effective allies for advancing cultural safety and humility and what health service staff and allies can do to understand and integrate this work into their practice or interactions with First Nations and Aboriginal clients.

Hear from thought leaders such as Joe Gallagher, Dr. Evan Adams, Dr. Nadine Caron, Margo Greenwood, and representatives from each regional health authority in the province!

September 26-30, 2016 marks the recognition of Environmental Public Health Week across Canada. Environmental public health is a branch of the health care system that looks at how your environment (inside and outside, natural and human-made) can affect your health. This includes the food you eat, the air you breathe and the water you drink. It also includes things like making sure conditions in your home don’t make you sick, and that your health is protected in times of emergency.

To mark Environmental Public Health Week the FNHA would like to share a new partnership and tool that aims to support First Nations communities to identify, monitor and communicate environmental changes in their territories.

World breastfeeding week (WBW) is celebrated in many places around the world the first week of August. However, in Canada and many other countries we celebrate it the first week of October. Why? October, the tenth month of the year, was chosen because it symbolizes the first week of a baby’s life (after nine months of pregnancy) when a baby starts to breastfeed.

If you have questions or would like more information about breastfeeding immediately, please connect with your local community health nurse or primary care provider; or call HealthLink BC at 8-1-1, a toll free telephone line to talk to nurses, pharmacists, dietitians and health navigators. 

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has extended the deadline to receive applications for capital and operating grants  under the Highway 16 Transportation Action Plan community vehicle grant program. Applicants now have until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 28, 2016, to submit their applications.

Up to $800,000 in provincial funding is available to fund up to 70% of capital and operating costs for vehicles that provide community transportation service to and from the Highway 16 corridor.

Communities located along the Highway 16 corridor from Prince Rupert to Prince George are eligible to apply for grant funding.

The FNHA, in partnership with the BC Lung Association and regional health authorities, have created a community-based interactive initiative called ‘Inside Out’ to increase awareness of the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and work towards making the home a smoke-free space.

Secondhand smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, many of which are linked to lung and heart disease, ear infections, breathing problems and weakened immune systems. Secondhand smoke also has a link to higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome for infants who are exposed. The campaign message is simple – “When children are inside, smoking goes out."

The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council), in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia, is launching the nomination process for the 2016 Premier’s Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport. These awards provide a unique opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of Aboriginal athletes who excel in performance sport and who are using their experiences in sport to shape their future.
