All Ireland Hockey Semi-FinalsCongratulations to the Senior 1 boys' hockey team who competed in the All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship for the third successive year last week. The High School defeated Kilkenny College and Royal and Prior Comprehensive School before drawing with Wallace High School to qualify for the semi-final stage for the first time in the history of the school. We warmly congratulate the team on the significance of this historic achievement. Ghost - The MusicalHere is a little glimpse of this year's Senior Play 'Ghost - The Musical', which will run 16-18 November. Tickets are available at break times and at the door on the night, €7 for pupils and €10 for adults. Mark the date in your diary. This is one production that you will NOT want to miss! Act of RemembranceThe High School commemorated all those who died in conflict during the twentieth century in an Act of Remembrance on Thursday and Friday this week. In particular, the service of at least 476 past pupils who volunteered during the First World War and Second World War (of whom 99 were killed) was marked in a short ceremony held during Assembly. The Principal (together with the Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputy Head Boy, and Deputy Head Girl) will represent The High School at the annual Act of Remembrance which will be held in the presence of His Excellency the President of Ireland at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday. TCD Entrance ExhibitionsWe are delighted to have been advised by the Board of Trinity College, Dublin that a number of immediate past pupils from The High School have been awarded Entrance Exhibitions in recognition of their high levels of performance in the Leaving Certificate examinations. The awards are made to Junior Freshmen who are new entrants to full-time undergraduate degree courses at the university whose performance in the Leaving Certificate examination was greater than the equivalent of 560 points. In 2017, Alexander Durac, Rachel Ferguson, and Robbie Kelleher achieved this notable distinction and were awarded Entrance Exhibitions. We offer these and all recent past pupils of The High School our warmest congratulations on their achievements and wish them every success in their academic careers. Cycling SafetyIt is essential that pupils cycling to and from The High School obey the rules set out in the Road Traffic Acts and Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations 1997-2014 in order to reduce the risk of death or injury. In particular, pupils are reminded that a bicycle ridden in a public place during lighting-up hours must be equipped with a rear red reflector, and with front and rear lights that can be seen from a reasonable distance. The front light must be white or yellow, while the rear light must be red. It is legal to use flashing lights. The absence of a front or rear light during lighting-up hours may result in a fixed charge for a cycling offence (which is currently set at €40) being imposed. You can find further information about the laws and
regulations in place regarding cycling by clicking on the enclosed link: In addition to the legal requirement to equip bicycles with lights and reflectors, the Road Safety Authority strongly recommends that cyclists should always wear reflective clothing and a helmet to reduce the risk of death or injury. The video was hugely popular on social media, much to the delight of Team Hope organisers who said that the video was 'fantastic!' We agree. Well done, Shona and Tara! Form 1 Study SkillsDuring the week pupils from Form 1 had a talk in the Demonstration Theatre about how to best prepare for the upcoming Christmas Examinations. Pupils were given tips on time management and how to use study timetables. A quiet, phone-free home environment was recommended along with evenly-spaced study-breaks. Dates for your Diary
