Full Body (Laughter)

By Mentee Alum Kaya Fraser

Look me in the eyes when I laugh. Look at our Black bodies that aren't just bodies and our Black laughter that will never know death, even when we do.
Even if we do.

FRIDAY NIGHT SALON

Celebrating Black History, Present, and Future Through Storytelling with Janis Kearney

Friday, Feb. 24, 6-7:15 PM ET, Virtual

We're paying tribute to the Queen of Gospel, Mahalia Jackson, with Janis Kearney, author of Only on Sundays: Mahalia Jackson's Long Journey. Through interviews, songs, and accounts from those who knew her, Janis crafted her new book about Mahalia's extraordinary story. We'll hear about the care and curiosity needed to write historical nonfiction through a creative lens and practice finding the spectacular figures in our own lives.

Open to the public, all mentors, mentees, and alumni

BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROMPT

Create A Poem from
"Lift Every Voice and Sing"

Exploring the Legacy of the Black National Anthem

In addition to the glory of Rihanna and Pat Mahomes, there's one more reason that this year's Super Bowl was a celebration of Black excellence. Sheryl Lee Ralph's performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" marks the first time that the Black National Anthem was sung to kick off the championship. Read mentee alum Mary Massaquoi's erasure poem of the anthem, and get inspired to create your own!
