Dear subscriber,

Welcome to this week's edition of Sydney Health Weekly! Central and Eastern Sydney PHN aims to make this newsletter your efficient one-stop-shop for primary health news and events within the central and eastern Sydney region. We are constantly working on making your news as targeted and relevant as possible and welcome your feedback to editor@cesphn.com.au.

National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week 2019

Building on the success of the #cerFIX2035 campaign which was launched in July, Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation will be celebrating National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week 2019 from November 11-17. Australia is on track to become the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer by 2035. December 2019 marks two years since the introduction of the National Cervical Screening Program and therefore all women should have had a screening under the new system and now be in the new Program.
Further information, including resources, can be obtained by contacting Leisa Ashton at leisa.ashton@accf.org.au.

Assistance for GPs completing a QI Activity

Did you know you can reflect on any one of your Category One activities recorded against your current credit point statement to fulfill your Quality Improvement Requirement? All you need to do is select at least one Category One activity you feel has encouraged you to improve or change the way you practice and reflect on the following questions in the QI reflection form:

  • Outline why you have identified the Category 1 activity as effecting quality improvement in your workplace
  • Identify what changes have been implemented to improve patient health outcomes
  • Describe how you will measure and maintain the improvement in your workplace over time

Quality Improvement PIP – first quarter update

Quality improvement is foundational to high performing practices in primary care. The PIP QI commenced on 1 August 2019. CESPHN has successfully supported general practices in the region to participate in the Quality Improvement PIP incentive payment with 314 practices signing up to the incentive. This represents nearly 80 per cent of accredited practices in our region. Our goal is to make your practices participation in PIPQI as easy as possible – we want to assist.

Keeping up to date with GP Antenatal Shared Care

Did you know that there is a specific bi-monthly ANSC e-newsletter emailed directly to all ANSC GPs? It is recommended that all GPs participating on a GP ANSC Program receive this newsletter as it is the main method of communicating important protocol and/or hospital updates and general pregnancy information relevant to GPs participating on a GP ANSC Program across the CESPHN. If you missed a copy, previous issues can be located on the CESPHN website.
If you have not been receiving the e-newsletter, please contact info@cesphn.com.au and ask to be placed on the ANSC e-newsletter mailing list.

New hepatitis B campaign

NSW Health will soon launch a campaign encouraging people of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic and sub-Saharan African heritage to “talk to their doctor” about getting tested for hepatitis B. A quarter of a million people in Australia have chronic hepatitis B infection, however only around two-thirds are diagnosed, and only one-fifth are engaged in care. Diagnosis, monitoring and appropriate referral to specialist care are essential to prevent the complications of liver cancer and liver failure.

Survey: gauging interest for an ALM entitled 'Hot topics in sexual health for GPs'

GPs play a crucial role in managing STIs and their complications. In recent years, the diagnosis of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have increased considerably. In 2020 within the RACGP CPD program, a workshop entitled ‘Hot topics in sexual health for the general practitioner’ will be offered. The workshop will be offered as a one day face-to-face program in Melbourne and will cover a range of sexual health topics including updates in current STI guidelines. Your responses to this short five minute survey (by 15 November 2019) will help with planning this workshop and by sharing your best one-liner for starting a conversation with patients about STI tests you can be eligible to enter a prize draw for a free registration to this workshop.
Click here to take the survey. This ALM will be open to GPs nationally, so GP responses are welcomed from anywhere in Australia.
