Moving Up

By Mentee Emmy Cai

For this story, mentee Emmy Cai was particularly inspired by the career journeys employees shared in Girls Write Now's workshop in partnership with Macmillan, The Joy of Networking: Making Authentic Connections. "...One thing became increasingly clear: where you start is not where you finish. Over the past few years in high school, I was forced to ask myself the question, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?'. The truth is, I have no clue. But listening to the stories of these successful women, I am reminded that this is okay. My dream career may not come to me right away, but it is the skills I gain on the way that
truly matter."

INDIE BOOKSELLERS MONTH

Yu & Me Bookstore

Newcomer to Chinatown Brings Community Together During Hardships

Throughout July, we're celebrating the indie booksellers who bring us the stories we love. Owner Lucy Yu founded Yu & Me Books, which bears her mother's initials, with the aim of focusing on immigrant stories and fostering a "space where we can dream together, share our passion, strive for change, and push systems closer to justice." On July 4th, Yu & Me suffered from a devastating fire in their building. They are currently collecting funds from the community to get them on their feet again, and the support has been overwhelming.
