ABDO CET event programme July - Dec 2017

An ABDO CET events brochure for the second half of 2017 will be included with the July issue of Dispensing Optics.

This is the middle year of the current CET cycle, so we’re halfway through. Many of you will have gained the majority of your interactive points already, but don’t forget that the GOC expect you to gain 6 points every year, even if you’ve reached your 36.

By the end of 2017, ABDO CET will have provided more than 120 events in this cycle. We have planned locations well ahead for the brochure, but with Go Local events and addressing CET ‘dry spots’, there will be more added as the year progresses.

Level 4 Diploma for Optical Assistants
September 2017 brings an exciting new course and Level 4 qualification from ABDO College and WCSM…

Supporting our businesses to have sustainable growth, to plan for the future and to thrive, we need to have the right people with the right skills delivering excellence to our patients. For individuals working in our practices, the opportunity to grow and develop is key. In this area ABDO College and WCSM have some great things to offer. There is a lot of change in optics, and one of those exciting changes is a new qualification and course that is commencing mid-September 2017.

The Level 4 Diploma for Optical Assistants (accredited by Ofqual – The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) is a new qualification awarded by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers for optical assistants. It is expected that holders of the qualification will be entitled to use the letters SMC (OA) after their name. It is tailored to the needs of those who aspire to become senior optical assistants and supervisors. The course would also give a great foundation for those who may wish to go on to study for the FBDO qualification at a later date.

Macular Week

Macular Week will take place 26 June – 2 July, the week aims to raise awareness of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK.

This year the theme is smoking and sight loss. Many people know that smoking causes cancer but a recent survey carried out by the Macular Society revealed 53 per cent of people are not aware of the links between smoking and sight loss. With smokers up to four times more likely to go onto develop AMD than non-smokers, use Macular Week to spread the message.
