Jordan’s Principle in BC

Through an administrative arrangement with Canada, the FNHA is responsible for administering Jordan’s Principle resources in British Columbia. Jordan's Principle is meant to prevent First Nations children from being denied essential services or experiencing delays in receiving them.

Jordan's Principle:

  • Applies to all First Nations children
  • Applies to all government services to ensure there are no gaps in government services to First Nations children
  • Provides payment for needed services by the government or department that first receives the request

FNHA administering Jordan’s principle does not interfere with the fiduciary relationship between the federal government and First Nations in BC.

Take a Minute to Connect With Your Loved Ones – You Could Save a Life

In honour of World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10, 2017, we stand beside those impacted by suicide and the loved ones of those currently in crisis. We encourage all First Nations citizens and their health-care providers to stand together to raise awareness of suicide and its prevention.

As First Nations people, we acknowledge that each individual's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is intrinsically linked to connections with family and friends, land, culture, community and self-determination.

The root causes of suicide among First Nations and Aboriginal peoples are complex and stretch across generations: stress and low mood, made worse by poverty; historic trauma, including the intergenerational trauma of residential schools; racism; and marginalization (including living life with fewer choices).

Canning Knowledge and Keeping Our Babies Strong Through Food Recipe Stories and Training Questions

First Nations people have lived off the land since time immemorial. The FNHA would like to promote canning as one form of food preservation and we are currently developing a canning training curriculum and information resource to ensure that community members have the tools to preserve healthy foods in a safe way.

We would like to learn more from First Nations Elders and communities who may have been involved with traditional practices, food processing and preservation. We are also looking for traditional stories and recipes to be featured in the resource.
