Click here Vol 22 No 17 27 January 2017 Senior Boys Make Hockey HistoryThe High School Senior 1 hockey team made history on Wednesday 25 January beating Wesley College on penalty strokes to reach the LHA Schoolboys' Senior League final for the first time in the history of the school. This also means automatic qualification for the All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship next year. It was a great defensive performance by our High School players: well done to the team and all coaches involved. The league final will be played against St Andrew's College at Newpark Comprehensive School on Wednesday 1 February at 3.00 pm. Watch out for further details on HSD social media platforms in the coming days. Please come out and support your team! Young Scientists at The High School DublinOn 13 January, all Form 1 pupils from The High School attended the 53rd BT Young Scientist Exhibition. When we arrived at the RDS we went to see a show on Space in 3D. We were given 3D glasses to experience the Solar System, watch a comet tumbling towards the Sun, and observe the surface of Mars. I enjoyed the show because it made you feel like you were floating in the middle of the Galaxy. Then we went to the Exhibition Hall where hundreds of people were showing their research projects and carrying out experiments. I really enjoyed myself and would certainly like to visit the exhibition again next year. HSD Debating SuccessThis year The High School took part in the Concern Debates again. The debates are always very topical and this year was no exception. We debated against various different schools on the topics: 'Ending World Hunger by 2030 is an Impossible Dream'; 'France were wrong to Ban Religious Symbols in Public Institutions'; Europe is Failing Africa'; and 'The UN should be Disbanded'. We won three of the four debates and got a total of ten out of a possible twelve points. Music Matters - HSD ComposersLast term in Music lessons Transition Year pupils had to write a song as part of a class assignment. We worked together to come up with lyrics and created a melody using guitars as our main instrument. It was a difficult task but we managed to complete it. Last Friday a professional sound engineer came to The High School to record our song. It was a great experience. We enjoyed using professional recording equipment and had great fun trying different harmonies. We were delighted with the finished result. Click here to listen. Transition Year Cultural ExcursionOn Wednesday 18 January Transition Year pupils went on a cultural excursion to the city centre. We met at National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts and History at Collin's Barracks at 10 am having made our own way there. Here we saw an interesting exhibition entitled "Soldiers and Chiefs" including relevant topics like 1916. We were then given an hour to make our way across town to Kildare Street to visit the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology. We saw the preserved bog bodies and Viking longboats. Overall, a great time was had by everyone. National Indoors Rowing ChampionshipA number of High School rowers participated in the Irish Indoor Rowing Championship last Saturday. Áine Ryan, Daisy and Oliver O'Toole, and Alison and Sarah Daly all prospered in their events. Áine Ryan and Daisy O'Toole were very successful in the 2 km event and Oliver O'Toole impressed in his event on the ergometer. Alison and Sarah Daly came second in the 2 km relay. We are delighted by our pupils' many achievements in this national competition. One Act Play CompetitionRehearsals for this year's One Act Play are now in full swing. The cast met with director and playwright, Mr Milofsky, on Friday after school with very exciting results. Our senior pupils will be performing their original dramatic piece, entitled 'Last Class on a Monday', on Thursday 16 February at St Andrew's College. We wish them the very best of luck in the competition. Tickets will be available at the door on the night. Please come along and support our wonderful team of actors. Dates for your Diary
