Friday Roundup

 

Welcome to this week's Friday Roundup. Last Friday we held another Mid-Autumn Festival event this time with International Students Services, which is where the above image was taken from! Students were able to enjoy moon cakes, live music, play traditional Chinese games and have their names translated into Chinese. We still have one more activity planned to help celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival this year, an online lantern making workshop with OzAsia Festival. More information on this can be found below.

This week we kicked off our first HSK Chinese Proficiency Test Course for level 4. Although enrollments have closed for this years courses, if you are interested in taking the test and assessing your Chinese ability you can enroll here. We also have our Chinese Conversation Corner every Tuesday and Friday to help boost your level. On Tuesday's you will be matched up with a Chinese language partner for any personalised help you need. Whether you just want to practise your speaking skills, need help with your homework, exam study, or even if you are a complete beginner, our native Chinese speaking volunteers can help. Friday's as you may have seen each week in this newsletter, we prepare a topic where you can learn about an aspect of Chinese traditional or modern pop culture, and also pick up new vocabulary at the same time, just email us to register.

Moon Lantern Parade: Lantern Making Workshop
Friday 23 October, 11:00am (ACST)

Presented together with OzAsia Festival, join us from home or your classroom for a digital lantern making workshop by artist Paula Gallagher.

OzAsia Festival’s Moon Lantern Parade has a very important history, founded in the traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival. Each year, tens of thousands of people to come together in one magnificent day-long celebration that culminates in Australia’s largest lantern parade.

Now you can have fun creating moon lanterns of your own! Design, make and decorate your lantern with the help of an online video and downloadable resources.

OzAsia Talks - 'No (Under)Standing Any Time'
Tuesday 27 October 11:00am (ACST)

Chinese-Australian university professor Jing Han, who helps provide English subtitles for popular Chinese reality TV show If You Are the One, will appear in a panel discussion about cross-cultural communication later this month.

The panel, No (Under)Standing Any Time, will be held as part of OzAsia Talks – an online series presented by OzAsia Festival, Australia’s leading contemporary arts festival engaging with Asia.

Chengyu of the week

Chengyu 成语 are a type of Chinese idiom which mostly consist of four characters. They were widely used in classical Chinese and are still commonly used today.

Direct Translation: see lots know widely
Meaning: experienced and knowledgeable; have a mind of wide scope.
