Gateway-2-Health is a project newsletter providing updates and key information on the Health Gateway to Industry Schools project being delivered by CheckUP. Our project team is working closely with Queensland schools and health industry employers to promote career pathways and support students' understanding of the varied and in-demand roles in the health sector. We will also help to facilitate learning and experiential opportunities for both students and teachers.

Student Experience Grants

CheckUP is introducing a grant program to support Health Gateway schools in the development of health career activities, events and resources for their students, and to facilitate local industry and community engagement in line with the program's objectives.

All interested Health Gateway Schools will be eligible to apply for Student Experience Grants of up to $2,500 per calendar year. CheckUP is utilising an online platform called SmartyGrants to manage the grant application and reporting process, with eligibility for funding to be determined by the Health Gateway project team in accordance with the approved Grant Guidelines.

To apply, schools will complete an application form, which will provide details of the proposed activity, target group and anticipated outcomes. Following delivery of the activity or event, schools will be required to submit a reporting form detailing outcomes and costs involved for each approved activity.

As the Student Experience Grants program is launching in mid-2021, schools will be eligible to apply for a "retrospective" grant seeking reimbursement for relevant activities and events that have been delivered earlier in the school year (January-June 2021).

Health Gateway Schools interested in applying for a grant are encouraged to view the Grant Guidelines before initiating an application.

If you have any questions or require further information, please get in touch with your school's Project Manager (Sam, Sabrina or Mary-Anne).

Career Snapshot Posters

Fresh off the press! The team has developed a series of eight Career Snapshot resources that outline study pathways, job profiles and potential careers that students can embark upon while still in school.

The Career Snapshots have been printed as A1 posters and a set will be delivered to all of our current Health Gateway schools - either by post or hand delivered by your Project Manager. These posters can be displayed on notice boards, in training rooms and health hubs, or simply in the classroom.

The posters are also available for download as digital files via the link below. The password to the Health Gateway Resources section will be shared with all our schools in the coming weeks.

Choose Your Own Health Career @
National Careers Week

During National Careers Week (17-23 May), Health Gateway Schools around the state organised a range of events to introduce students to the many career opportunities available to them within the health industry via both VET and university pathways.

The Health Gateway team was invited by a number of schools to participate in career expos, to demonstrate the Choose Your Own health career website, share Gateway resources and to deliver information sessions to groups of students interested in working in the health sector.

The Gateway-2-Health website now has an Events Calendar where all upcoming activities and events are listed. If your school is planning an event and would like the Health Gateway Team to be involved, please contact your Project Manager or email the team at gateway@checkup.org.au.

About the Gateway Program

The Health Gateway to Industry Schools program (GISP) is a two-year project being delivered by CheckUP in partnership with Queensland’s Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT). The project aims to develop school students’ knowledge and understanding of the varied roles available in the health workforce and improve their access to learning and experiential opportunities in Queensland’s growing health sector.

The project forms part of a broader Gateway to Industry Schools ("GISP") initiative which currently caters to ten distinct industry sectors. Click here to read more about DESBT's GISP projects.
