New Town Retail Precinct UpgradeCouncil approves upgrade plansOn Monday night the Hobart City Council approved the implementation of the New Town Retail Precinct Upgrade based on the concept that was developed in collaboration with the New Town community’s project action team. The project will revitalise the shopping area and improve access with pedestrian crossing facilities, gathering places and a refreshed streetscape appearance for the community to enjoy and take pride in. Detailed design is underway and will be complete by the end of 2018 and construction is planned to commence early in 2019. The upgrade for the New Town retail precinct is part of the City of Hobart Capital City Strategic Plan 2015-2025 and the City’s Local Retail Precincts Plan. By improving our local shopping areas in collaboration with local communities, the City aims to improve walkability and vibrancy of Hobart’s neighbourhood areas, supporting local economies and making our local places more attractive and liveable. The streetscape design for New Town has been developed in response to priorities identified by a local Project Action Team comprising 23 local business people and residents, and through an extensive program of engagement activities in New Town in which local traders, residents, institutions and schools were invited to participate. To contribute to the revitalisation of the precinct, an artist has been commissioned to create a series of engaging and enduring public art works that will capture and enhance the unique identity of New Town. More information about the public artwork in the coming weeks – stay tuned! City officers will continue to consult with the traders and residents on New Town Road to finalise the design and coordinate the construction phase.
