Brieze Bell Assistant Clinical Professor Please welcome the September 2021 new hires to our DHM family! There are 13 new academic and clinical faculty members joining us this month: Brandon Scott, Emma Ye, Jasleen Kahlon, Katarzyna (Kasia) Kadela, Millie Arora, Omid Shah, Owen Huang, Sandeep (Sunny) Kishore, Sergio Torres, Jeannie Tran, Shiecca Madzima, Tianyu (Sissi) Chen and Tiffany Chang. Equity & Belonging in Hospital Medicine As we all work together to deliver equitable patient care, this month's equity pearl is to reflect upon our opiate prescribing practices. This study (NEJM, July 2021) explored opiate prescribing patterns in 310 health systems in the US, and found that white patients received 36% more pain medication by dosage than Black patients, even though both groups received prescriptions at similar rates. A simple question to ask yourself when prescribing opiates on admission, cross-cover, or discharge, is "Is bias involved as I write this order?" It may change your next steps! To learn more about anti-racist strategies, please note this faculty development opportunity: "Tea House Series: Striving Together To Be Antiracist". The Tea House Series consists of 5 unique sessions that will begin in Fall 2021 and end by Summer 2022. The sessions are on Wednesdays between 4:00pm-5:30pm.

I know a great deal of thought and intentionality went into ALL of it...just wanted to let you know that it was very helpful and we feel very welcome! I know this work can sometimes be tireless, but we are very grateful." - Sandeep (Sunny) Kishore Bassem Ghali & Zhenya Krapivinsky "I wanted to recognize Bassem and Zhenya for creating and overseeing the ‘My Life, My story’ project. It is a truly tremendous effort that is so important in humanizing our patients and understanding where they are coming from as people, how their family, culture, faith, race/ethnicity have shaped their experience of illness, and highlighting their goals and what is important to them. I am deeply humbled when I read these notes, and they often bring tears to my eyes. I know it’s hard to measure the impact of work like this, but it has been tremendously impactful for me personally and I know it is a labor of love so I just wanted to express my gratitude." - Molly Kantor Natalia Loaiza "Thank you SO much to Natalia for a truly remarkable job stewarding in more than 40 new hires these past few months. Managing where everyone was in the process and keeping leadership updated on things like licensing delays requires such a high-level of attention to detail and multi-tasking. Most importantly, we are so lucky to have such a warm and competent person as one of the first faces our new faculty members see coming into DHM. Thank you!!" - Annie Droste Rashmi Manjunath "Rashmi is a straight up superhero at Mount Zion, I wanted to sing her praises." - Dan Reiss |
