Click here Vol 25 No 04 27 Sept 2019 Bright Futures - Open Evening 2019Last week we welcomed incoming Form One pupils (2022 entrants) and their parents to The High School for our annual Bright Futures - Open Evening. Current pupils brought tours of visitors around the main school building, Technical Block, Music Block, Gymnasium, and Archive. There they were met by helpful members of staff who spoke passionately about their subjects and answered the many questions that came their way. Pupils demonstrated their knowledge on an array of topics and issues. They presented gymnastic displays, performed musical pieces, sang, and painted while others encouraged visiting pupils to participate in quizzes and games, and to imagine what it will be like to attend The High School. The building was a hive of colourful activity and hummed with giddy excitement all evening. We hope that it revealed just a little of what we do at The High School and that our visitors enjoyed themselves half as much as we did!Hockey Ireland RepresentationEarlier this week, one hundred junior hockey players from The High School went to the Sports Centre at UCD to show their support for HSD past pupils Alison Meeke (HSD, 2003-09) and Nicola Daly (HSD, 2000-06) who were representing Ireland in an international against
China. Ireland is currently ranked 8th in the world while China is ranked 10th. This made for a well-matched game. We left the school at lunch time and were the first to arrive, excited and proud to support our country and our past pupils. Alison is also a hockey coach at The High School. Both teams played well but neither were able to score in the 70 minutes of play. As a result it went to penalties where Ireland showed their true strength, placing four out of five goals in the net. The final result was 4-2 to Ireland. The next match for Ireland will decide if they qualify for the Olympics in 2020 or not. We wish them well in this endeavour and look forward to attending future games supporting the Ireland team. Leinster Hockey SuccessCongratulations to this High School pupil who represented Leinster in the hockey interprovincials in Cork last weekend. We wish our pupil every success in future competitions. All-Ireland Rugby WinLast weekend High School rugby players travelled en masse to Donnybrook Stadium to support Ms Deacon and the Leinster Women's rugby team play Connacht in the All-Ireland League Final. It was a thrilling game and especially poignant as it was Ms Deacon's final game in the sport. We were not disappointed. Leinster thoroughly defeated the opposition 25-12. We wish Ms Deacon all the best in her retirement from rugby. Class ReunionHSD past pupils from the class of 1999 gathered together for their twenty-year reunion at The High School last week. It was lovely to welcome so many familiar faces back to their alma mater. When is your next class reunion? Contact The High School and Diocesan PPU for details!
