Remembering Our Most Vulnerable Neighbors

Dear Friend,

As we look for ways to support Bay Area residents most affected by COVID-19, I would like to share important news about an initiative to provide emergency assistance to our most vulnerable neighbors.

The Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund is expediting the release of nearly $2 million to help lower-income individuals and families facing severe economic challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Season of Sharing is supported through a longstanding partnership between the San Francisco Chronicle and the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund.

Across the Bay Area’s nine counties, lower-income residents concerned for their health and that of their families are now facing increased threat of layoffs, homelessness and hunger. The negative economic ripples of COVID-19 are affecting service positions, including restaurant workers, drivers and hourly workers that staff events. Many children who qualify for free or reduced-priced meals are missing daily nutrition and care as schools close.

Season of Sharing is uniquely positioned to provide direct support during this crisis. For over three decades, it has forged meaningful partnerships with social service agencies and food banks across the Bay Area to distribute over $147 million in emergency assistance to more than 160,000 households. Its community partners work with a network of 150 direct service providers to identify individuals and families requiring emergency assistance and to rapidly provide the resources they need to stay healthy, housed and stabilized.

As we check in with loved ones to ensure their health and safety, I encourage you also to consider those who face this crisis with very little to fall back on. If you’re interested in learning how you and others may contribute to alleviate this increased demand for emergency assistance, please visit Season of Sharing COVID-19 Response.

Thanks as always for your partnership and support. Together with my colleagues at the Haas, Jr. Fund, I hope you and your families stay well during this difficult time.

Sincerely,
