First Nations Celebrate Winter Wellness at 168 Events Across BC

Events will take place in all corners of the province, from Sooke to Creston, and Good Hope Lake to Lax Kw' alaams.

First Nations communities and partners will be celebrating the best of the winter months with 168 Winter Wellness events taking place in January and February 2018. The FNHA is investing $320,000 in community wellness events, organized by and for First Nations in BC. This investment is supported by almost $125,000 in in-kind and financial contributions from community-based and regional partners. Events will take place in all corners of the province, from Sooke to Creston, and Good Hope Lake to Lax Kw' alaams.

“From a cultural viewpoint, winter is a time of reflection and ceremony, and this is reflected in many of the Winter Wellness Grant intiatives,” said FNHA Chief Executive Officer Joe Gallagher. “As a health and wellness partner, FNHA recognizes that the work of improving health outcomes belongs to each of us, our families and our Nations. Wellness can mean many different things to many different people, and we’re happy to support communities and their members to determine what will work for them.”

Register Now for the First-ever FNHA Mental Health & Wellness Summit

Supporting Needs Identified by First Nations Communities in BC

FNHA invites two representatives from each BC First Nations community working in mental health- and wellness-related roles (i.e. health director, mental health worker etc.) to register and FNHA will reimburse travel expenses. General attendees are welcome to attend at their own expense.

Participating in this MH&W Summit can support readiness to implement MH&W initiatives in your community by learning about specific examples of lessons learned and successes achieved in communities in BC and across Canada; strengthening your professional MH&W network; and enhancing your understanding of the value and benefit of a harm reduction approach in supporting healthy communities

The MH&W Summit program features a mix of speaker presentations, breakout sessions, and panel discussions supported by facilitators to maximize engagement and dialogue on key themes in mental health and wellness.

Deadline to register is January 26.

NAHO Resources Now on FNHA Website

The FNHA is pleased to announce it will be hosting selected publications of the former National Aboriginal Health Organization (NAHO) on our website. NAHO was established in December 2000 as a national, not-for-profit dedicated to improving the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, families and communities.

During its tenure NAHO produced an extensive literature devoted to improving the health and well-being of Indigenous peoples in Canada. The publications to be hosted by the FNHA include wellness resources, toolkits, and health planning and policy documents to be used by and for First Nations communities. These resources cover a vast range of governance and health-related topics, from disease prevention, to community research and health service delivery.

Find these on the FNHA website by searching NAHO in the top right search function. www.fnha.ca
