Vale Jackie Crowe

We were very sad to hear of the recent passing of National Mental Health Commissioner, Jackie Crowe.

Jackie brought an intelligent and fearless consumer voice to mental health policies and services. She was able to challenge current paradigms while respecting the efforts of those working in the system. She was one of the most influential figures in mental health reform in Australia and was involved in activities at SEMPHN and across Australia.

Jackie demonstrated the importance of having people with lived experience leading mental health reform, and undertook key work with the Centre of Research Excellence in Suicide Prevention as well as significant national collaboration on the development of performance data for the mental health system.

Jackie’s passing is a huge loss to the health community in Australia. Her voice will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

Congratulations Atticus Health Carrum: 2017 General Practice of the Year

We're so pleased that a SEMPHN-catchment General Practice, Atticus Health Carrum, was announced as the 2017 recipient of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) General Practice of the Year Award.

The award recognises a practice’s approach to patient health and wellbeing, exemplary service and quality of care provided to patients, health promotion initiatives and the practice’s involvement in general practice teaching.

RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel presented the award at the RACGP’s annual conference – GP17 – in Sydney. Dr Seidel said Atticus Health Carrum was a standout among this year’s state finalists.

“Atticus Health Carrum is completely focused on preventive healthcare and achieves this with a truly holistic approach,” Dr Seidel said.

“The team at Atticus Health Carrum delivers services with passion and seeks to understand patients, never judge, order or stereotype them.”

Dr Seidel said everyone in the Atticus Health Carrum team must be commended for the level of support they have provided their community.

“Atticus Health Carrum patients are all treated as individuals, which involves an enormous amount of time and careful management,” Dr Seidel said.

Congratulations to the team at Atticus Health Carrum!

Free infant first aid in the news

It was great to see Tiny Hearts First Aid featured on Channel 9 news last weekend.

Through the After Hours program, SEMPHN is funding Tiny Hearts First Aid for two years to provide first aid training to more than 4000 members of the community in the Casey Cardinia region.

The program aims to:

  • educate parents in self-triage skills and taking appropriate action depending on their child’s condition,
  • empower parents with confidence, knowledge and skills to identify and manage medical incidents
  • build community knowledge of after hours services.

It's expected that increased health literacy will reduce the need for after hours primary care and emergency department presentations.

Cheat sheets for uploading Shared Health Summaries

We have brief 'cheat sheets' that show the steps to upload Shared Health Summaries into a patient’s My Health Record.

There are versions for Medical Director, Best Practice, Genie, and Zedmed. You can download them from the ePIP Notebook (the Training and Support note).

The cheat sheets are short and narrow so they can be attached to a monitor.
