Let’s get this publishing party started! At our kickoff meeting, we will get to know one another and get a first behind the scenes look at the Girls Write Now site redesign—the new publishing platform we’ll be working with throughout the year as editors, curators, contributors and beyond.
Meredith Media Company and Girls Write Now meet for an intergenerational exchange to help teen writers ideate and draft winning essays for the Real Simple Essay contest launching October 13. Meredith employees—“Mentors for the Day”—help mentees take their drafts to the next level using Active Listening techniques in small breakout rooms. Employees will also answer questions about their professional journeys at magazines like InStyle, Real Simple and People.
In this workshop we will work with the way our bodies hold memory and personal experience. And the body can do this in endless ways. Poet Candice Iloh will lead us through a few sensory exercises in which we’ll collectively tap into our most memorable moments to pull up all the things we’ve been wanting to say. Rita Dove calls poems language at its most distilled and powerful, so this workshop isn’t about writing the most. It’s about choosing the words that move the reader the most and getting to take ownership of the
narrative as the writer, too.

We’ve gathered some of our favorite mentee stories to celebrate how far our community has come as we continue our mission to amplify the diverse voices of today through the power of writing.
Get to know our teaching artists and mentees who enrich our community with their work as we honor the history, culture and literature of Indigenous People by creating a shared space of storytelling.
