New Town Retail Precinct Upgrade

Public Artist Community Interviews

Dear New Town Community Member,

As part of the process to select the public artist for the New Town retail precinct upgrade we are calling on you to share your knowledge and experience of life in New Town. 

Three artists have been shortlisted by our public art selection panel from the initial expression of interest.  To help them develop a concept for artwork for the New Town upgrade they would like to meet with you to gain a sense of local identity which can inform their design.  Details of the meeting are:

Where: Sacred Heart College, New Town

When:  Wednesday 7 February 2018

Time: 5:00 – 6:30pm

Community members will have an opportunity to present their knowledge and experience of New Town to the artists.  The artists will ask questions as we go along, we are hoping that each of you can contribute to painting a “portrait” of New Town .  You shouldn’t need to pre-prepare anything, as you are all experts in your place, however some consideration could be given to:

• The way the main street is used at the moment
• What you love about New Town
• An aspect of daily life in New Town
• What it is like running a business in the precinct
• A recollection of a historic event in the area
• Describing the place, as it was, in another era
• Giving the main street a personality

You don’t need to have any expertise in art as our conversation will be focused on all aspects of New Town.

After interviewing the community, artists will have a few weeks to prepare an overall concept; the concepts will be reviewed and one artist will be awarded the opportunity to realise their design for the precinct.
