Calm the mind and body with a simple, yet powerful breathing technique No Images? Click here Dear colleagues, September is incredibly busy for most, so we’re featuring a relaxing breathing technique recommended by Debbie Douglass, PT, our balance and agility expert. It’s called Breathe 4-7-8, and it’s great for calming the mind, body, and nervous system. It’s even better when you breathe along with a narwhal. (See how to do it below!) Here’s how to do it: Sit with your shoulders resting down and away from your ears. Relax your jaw slightly, separating your upper and lower teeth. With either your mouth slightly opened or your lips closed, place the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your top teeth. Breathe in through your nose to a count of 4, and hold the breath for a count of 7. Now exhale through your open mouth to a count of 8. Repeat this breathing sequence 4 times. Try it throughout the day and see if your body becomes more relaxed.
