Between the bouncy house and game booths, haunted house and pumpkin patch, a grand time was had by all. UDA would like to thank our amazing Network of parents for all of their help with this event, and give a special thanks to Jen Gaston, Jen Jeffress, Rosemarie Sanchez, Marge Schiferl, Cassandra Smith, Nick Weiss, Julie Yow, IDEATE students (for designing/constructing the haunted house), and all of the classroom booth coordinators! Fifth Grade Staffing UpdateUDA has just received news that Mrs. Boisvert will take the remainder of the year off to care for the newest member of her family, baby Leo. We are excited she will have the opportunity to spend this time with her family, and look forward to the rest of the school year with Ms. Pehl! Ms. Pehl and her students have developed strong relationships already which will only continue to blossom. Consistency is important to UDA, and we are thankful to already have a fully credentialed teacher in place. Livescan at UDALivescan services will be offered on site again at the next coffee social on Friday, November 3 for $57 (cost will be slightly lower if 10 or more adults are scanned). If you plan on volunteering at UDA, a completed livescan is one of the requirements. Livescans will be conducted from 8-10:30am in the Hive, and appointments are available in 10 minute increments. You may call the main line or stop by the UDA front office to book your appointment. Please bring a driver’s license or US passport, along with a credit/debit card or cash. Middle School DanceThe first Middle School Dance of the year will be held on Friday, October 27 from 5-7pm. Admission is $5 per student, and tickets will be sold during middle school lunch times this week. Fourth GradeStudents in 4th grade were recently visited by the San Diego Zoo, and learned everything from the animals that inhabit the California watershed, to the effects of trash on the environment. The students had fun practicing their dissection skills and getting to meet a few animal ambassadors, such as a hedgehog and skink. Their next adventure is a field trip to the San Diego Zoo on October 31, for hands-on labs, dissections, and more animal encounters! Sixth GradeDr. Jeremy Long visited 6th grade classes last week to talk to the students about what it means to be a marine biologist. He shared his favorite parts of his job and also specific examples of his research, which included an interactive demonstration of how bio-luminescent bacteria help a specific species of squid in Hawaii keep it aware of surrounding predators. It was a fun way to connect the learning of cells to real world application! Eighth GradeLast week, 8th graders had the chance to “dig in” to their Gregor Mendel-like pea plant experiments at SMARTS Farm. In partnership with SMARTS Farm and their incredible staff, 8th graders will be growing and experimenting with pea plants throughout the year. They will conduct cross-breeding experiments and study GMOs. Hurricane ReliefThank you to all who donated school supplies for the Texas Hurricane Relief. The 4th graders in Mrs. Buie’s class were able to collect enough school supplies to fill 7 large boxes! A big shout out to Troop 4258 for donating over 10 backpacks filled with supplies. All the supplies were sent to Burbank Elementary School in Houston, Texas and Conroe High School in Conroe, Texas.
