The High School All Ireland Hockey Team

Sixteen of Ireland’s leading schools will lock horns this week as the 2016 All-Ireland Schoolboys Hockey Championship comes to Dublin on Wednesday 26 October.  The tournament will be played out across 33 matches, seven venues, four groups, and three days of high-octane action that serves as one of the highlights of the Irish hockey calendar.  The High School Senior Boys team will go into the competition against the reigning champions Banbridge Academy to battle their way through to the semi-finals on Friday week. The team qualified for the competition last season after winning the Senior Trophy and have been training towards the competition for the past 10 weeks.  We would like to wish them the best of luck.

Stepping into a Bright and Colourful World - On the HSD Art Trip

On Thursday 13 October Form 5 and 6 Art classes traveled to the MAC [full name] gallery in Belfast to see an exhibition by the artist David Hockney.  This is the first significant exhibition of Hockney's work in Ireland. David Hockney is a British painter, photographer, draughtsman, printmaker, and stage designer.  He is well known for his contribution to the pop art movement of the 1960s.  We got to see some typical Hockney pieces: his loud, bright, and colourful works as well as some of his lesser-known works.  His iPad paintings were also on show.  We had the privilege of having a guided tour led by the senior curator.  He showed us another exhibition by up-and-coming artist Keith Wilson.  After lunch we visited Ulster University and were brought on a tour of the Art Department.  We headed home after a long day examining art and taking notes, but I think it's fair to say we thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience.  We would like to thank Ms Killane and Ms Rogers for organising the event.

Giving Hope and Spreading Happiness

As the season of Advent once again draws near the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal returns to The High School.  Mr Barry and two Form 6 pupils appeared on TV3 at the weekend to talk about the charity and what it felt like to hand-deliver shoe boxes to children in Lesotho last summer.  (Click on the link above to view.)
This year Ms Hilliard and the Form 4 Team Hope committee want all of us to make an even bigger contribution to this worthwhile project.  But what is it all about?

A Fun-Filled Maths Week

As part of Maths Week we had a 'Maths Relay Race'. We were given a sheet of paper that had a Maths question on it.  Once we had solved the question, we ran up to the teacher with the answer.  If it was right, we could take the next question sheet.  The first group to complete 18 questions won.   There were prizes for the teams who came first and second.  It was a great activity and we really enjoyed it.

Trail Blazers - HSD Girls' Sevens Rugby Leinster Tournament

Congratulations to our Senior Girls' Rugby team who represented Dublin in the recent Leinster Schools Tournament.  Despite the tough opposition, they won two of their four matches, only missing a chance to go through to the next round by the narrowest of margins.  The undoubted ability of this team, which features two rugby internationals and a cricket international, not to mention a host of dedicated young sportswomen, is most impressive and the clearest proof yet that girls' rugby is alive and kicking at The High School.   What an inspiration to up-and-coming young girls at our school!

3G Bake Sale

Well done to 3G who carried out a bake sale in aid of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals last week.  They raised over €240.  Thank you to everyone who baked and to all those who bought the delicious fare.

First Aid - Form 4

For the past few weeks, Form 4 pupils have been learning first aid. We leaned how to respond to an emergency, how to interact with 999 operators and how to deal with cuts, burns and broken bones. The most useful part of the course was learning Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation or CPR because it could help save someone's life in the future.  It was a very worthwhile learning experience.
