Preparing for the Giant Jamboree

Time flies when you’re having fun and participating in iGEM! Everyone will soon be in Boston for the Giant Jamboree and you will be on stage giving your presentation.

To stay up to date on the Giant Jamboree be sure you check out the Giant Jamboree site.

How should you prepare?
  • Send your DNA (send by September 18)
  • Read the Do Not Release policy and remember, no live organisms
    at the Jamboree!
  • Look up the medal criteria for your track
  • Review the list of awards
  • See how the judges will evaluate your team
  • Make sure you also check out the poster guidelines
  • Work on your wiki early! Be sure to review the wiki requirements.
It will be difficult to edit with more teams trying to upload information.
  • Remember to fill out your judging form

Judges like to see a good narrative, backed up by strong experimental data. You don’t need to show every gel you ran, just the ones that contribute great evidence and support your project. Show how every part of your project fits together to tell a great story on stage. Looking for inspiration? Check out the judging committee's finalist case studies, starting on page 10 in the 2015 judging handbook.

Part Documentation and Submission

With the Giant Jamboree approaching quickly, your team is likely hard at work on your wiki and part pages. Adding a part to the Registry is quick and easy, but it is just the first step. Documenting and characterizing your part is vital to its continued use by Registry users. A well documented part offers a foundation for users to experiment and test your part and build upon your work. You will find that your well documented part will be used in new composite parts, new systems, and new team projects.

To help teams get started, we have provided a few guidelines for documenting your parts on the Registry.

In addition to adding and documenting parts, teams are also required to submit samples to the Registry. Please take a look at the requirements for part submission, as we've made a few changes this year. Part submissions must be shipped by the September 18 deadline and include a tracking number.

Synthesis has arrived at iGEM

We hope you have been taking advantage of the IDT synthesis offer. We would like to hear about how your team has been using this exciting offer! Tell us about it by on our Synthesis page.

Safety guidelines and forms

The Final Safety Form is due August 28! Students, please complete the form. Faculty advisors, please review what your students have written and submit the form.

Human Practices Showcase -- Call for Proposals

On Saturday afternoon at the Jamboree, the Human Practices committee will be holding a special session dedicated to hearing your feedback about the Human Practices aspects of the iGEM competition. We are excited to hear your views! iGEM teams and advisors will be invited to give 5-min talks that answer the following questions:

● What has been most interesting and enjoyable for you about Human Practices?
● What challenges has your team faced in developing and running your Human Practices activities?
● What support or resources can iGEM offer to help you improve your Human Practices work?

If you would like to apply to give one of these 5-minute presentations, please send an email to humanpractices@igem.org by September 7th with the following information:

  1. Team name
  2. Project name
  3. 1-2 sentence description of your Human Practices activity/activities this year
  4. 1-2 sentence description of why you would like to participate
  5. Name(s) of proposed presenters during the Human Practices Showcase (can be team members or advisors, or both). These individuals must commit to attending the showcase session on Saturday afternoon.

We are keen to hear feedback from all teams (and advisors) - whether you have been making big efforts in Human Practices for years now or are newer to iGEM, whether you are brimming with ideas for HP projects or confused about what an HP project looks like - come share your experiences with us!
