Click here Vol 24 No 06 12 Oct 2018 Simon Community Home RunOn the 6 October, a group of pupils and staff members from The High School took part in the annual Simon Community fun run. The event received an amazing turnout of over 2,000 runners, joggers, and walkers. It was wonderful to see the number of people who are determined to help solve Ireland's homelessness crisis. The funds raised from the day will go towards supporting the Simon Community and the excellent work they do to help the thousands of people affected by homelessness in Dublin and across the country. Hockey InternationalConor Empey (HSD, 2011-17) and Alex Flynn (HSD, 2012-18), former Captains of HSD Senior 1 hockey teams in successive years are pictured after playing for Three Rock Rovers in Barcelona last weekend. After winning the Irish Hockey club championships in May, the Rathfarnham club defied the European club rankings by winning their Euro Hockey League group and they now advance to the European finals in Eindhoven in April 2019 Form 1 ExcursionOn 1 October Form 1 went to Larch Hill Scout Centre for their bonding trip. On arrival we were broken into groups consisting of pupils from every Form 1 class. This was a great way to meet pupils we may not have talked to before. Group activities included orienteering, archery, grass sledging, and survival. An overall favourite was survival, not only just for what we learnt but because we got to eat toasted marshmallows heated over a flame made from tinder we collected ourselves. All activities involved working as a team so it really brought each group together. And of course there were lots of competitions throughout the day so if you didn’t work together you didn’t win! In the middle of the day all the groups came together for a picnic lunch out in the gorgeous
sunlight. To conclude the day, the groups competed against each other in one final race known as Chaos, a real high note to end on. After the Chaos was over we piled into the coaches and went back to school chatting and laughing at the day’s events with lots of new friends in Form 1. Geology TripLast week Form 6 Geography classes went on a field trip to Shankill Beach. All pupils doing Leaving Certificate Geography must study coastal erosion and produce a booklet on their findings. This is worth 20 percent of the overall marks. Our classes decided to look at erosion of the cliff on Shankill Beach. When we arrived at the beach we tested our hypotheses by measuring the height and frequency of the waves and the composition of the cliff. It was really worthwhile to see coastal erosion first hand and to spend the day out of doors. Ireland Hockey TrialsCongratulations to High School's Isobel Bowen on being selected for Ireland U16 trials. Mindfulness and Wellbeing in a Scone!Just in time for World Mental Health Day during the week, pupils from Form 1 enjoyed having a chat and a cup of tea with their classmates,as they sampled their delicious baking and marvelled at how so much happiness can be found in a well-made scone! Our recent past pupil and current coach Mia Jennings (HSD, 2011-17) had a great season last year. She started the 2017/18 season being apart of the winning Dublin Ladies Football All Ireland winning squad. Then she proceeded to help Loreto Ladies 1st XI win the EYHL Irish Hockey Championship to bring them into European competition in April 2019. This kick-started Mia's summer with a call up to the Ireland U21 squad. Mia went on to play a total of three series with the Ireland U21s against England and Wales.
