Project Update

Given the number of schools that have applied to the Gateway program, and their far-reaching locations across the State, we have decided to allocate each school a dedicated Project Manager from our team who will be your key Gateway contact point.  This allocation has been determined by the Hospital and Health Service (HHS) regions.

We would like to officially welcome Sabrina Kerr, who has joined the Health Gateway team as Project Manager for the Metro South and Gold Coast HHS regions. Sabrina will also play a key role in the development of teacher professional development resources for Health Gateway Schools. You can contact Sabrina at sabrinakerr@checkup.org.au.

Health Gateway Expands to the
Darling Downs

On Wednesday, 24 February 2021, St Saviour’s College in Toowoomba became the first school in the Darling Downs region to sign on as a Gateway School for both the Health and Community Services sectors. This engagement was formalised by Sharon Collins, College Principal signing an MoU and the official opening of the college's on-site Health Hub.

The Health Hub will be utilised by students who are undertaking a combined Certificate II in Health Support Services and Community Services. This includes St Saviour’s students, as well as students from St Mary’s College and St Joseph’s College, who will complete the practical component of their studies at the Hub.

The launch event was attended by a number of community leaders and industry representatives including Mayor Paul Antonio, staff from the Darling Downs HHS, Goolburri Aboriginal Health, UQ’s Rural Clinical School, as well as trainers from Connect ‘n’ Grow, who are delivering the dual qualification.

Health Gateway Schools Network

The Health Gateway Schools project has received immense interest through 2020, and we have engaged schools at varying stages of their journey in establishing pathways to health for their students.

CheckUP is in the process of creating a Health Gateway Schools Network, with voluntary membership open to all VET staff, career guidance counsellors, Health VET trainers and interested staff from Health Gateway Schools to come together and discuss, engage and learn from one other.

The Network meetings will be held online once a term, starting Term 2 2021, and will incorporate guided discussion and planning, guest speakers, project updates and some professional development opportunities.

We will be in touch soon with the details of the first meeting.
