All Native Basketball Tournament brings Prince Rupert Alive​

​Over 2,000 people descend on Prince Rupert every year to be a part of the All Native Basketball Tournament. The event is a huge draw for BC First Nations, particularly from the Coast, and this year was no exception. The tournament, which began in 1947, attracts athletes, coaches, family and supporters. Fifty one teams participated in the tournament. Read more here

Respecting Tobacco Training Sessions

Respecting Tobacco training sessions were created to increase health provider knowledge and skills in relation to non-traditional tobacco cessation and the respectful use of tobacco from the perspective of Elders and community experts. Two sessions have already been hosted and four still remain. Please register within with region where you work, as regionally specific tobacco cessation programs and resources will be discussed.

February 24-25 – Interior – Kelowna (10 seats remaining)

March 3-4 – Northern – Terrace (15 seats remaining)

March 10-11 – Northern – Prince George (2 seats remaining)

March 17-18​ – Vancouver Coastal – Musqueam (23​​ seats remai​n​ing)​

Interior Nations’ Research Forum Tackles Ethical Questions - See the Video Report here

On September 12 and 13, 2014, invited representatives gathered for the Interior Nations’ Research Forum.

The Interior Nations’ Research Forum was well received and attended by community members, scholars, researchers and academics. It was an exploratory opportunity in relationship building through research. Structured opportunities were offered to focus upon research and re-search as it relates to articulated vision of Health and Wellbeing.  Watch the Video Report!

N​enqayni Wellness Centre use geocaching to stay active during the Winter Wellness Challenge

The challenge for staff at the Nenqayni Wellness Centre, in Williams Lake, was to learn about geocaching and to get outside and have fun while doing it.

Staff and clients were given GPS units, passport booklets and safety instructions before they were allowed to search for the geocaches.  There were 12 geocaches in total and each of them wer​e various distances from the Wellness Centre. Read the full story here.

Salmonberry Trading hosts 14 Day Winter Fitness Challenge

The Salmonberry Trading co. Society hosted the 14 Day Keep Fit Challenge, from December 1st to 14th.

Learn, Live and Work with BC First Nations- Deadline today!

IHHS 408 is a unique four-week, 6-credit summer course that offers students in the health disciplines the opportunity to learn, live, work, and play in a First Nations community in BC. Students learn the diversity of Indigenous worldviews on health, wellness, and medicine, and begin to develop an appreciation of how these perspectives can be integrated into health care practice and promotion with Indigenous peoples in a culturally respectful way.

​​​​Fasters Raise Awareness about Violence against Women and Children​

As part of the Moosehide Campaign on February 12, several men at the FNHA proudly wore a small square of moose hide pinned to their clothing and also showed their support by participating in a one-day fast.  The Moosehide Campaign is in its fourth year, and its mission is to put an end to violence against women and children in First Nations Communities in BC. The vision of the campaign, organized by The Friendship Centre, is to grow support from organizations, communities, and governments throughout Canada. Read more here

Bursary for parents and guardians: Conference on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, March 5-7th

UBC Interprofessional Continuing Education is pleased to announce that we now have the funds for a few partial registration bursaries available to only these specific groups: birth parents, foster parents, adoptive parents, and grandparents. We apologize for not being in a position to extend bursaries to professionals in the field and others who have expressed interest.
