WORK STARTS ON HUB Wallan Community Services Hub

The $1.2 million Wallan Community Services Hub, which will provide access to much needed community services and programs with a focus on early intervention and prevention, is under construction.

The former childcare centre at 42/80 Bentinck Street, Wallan, will be transformed into an integrated community services hub, supporting the anchor service, the Goulburn Region Orange Door Access Point.

Member for Yan Yean, Danielle Green MP, Mayor Cr Rhonda Sanderson and Cr Bob Cornish were joined by service partners yesterday to see how the project was coming along.

The project has been jointly funded by the Victorian State Government providing $850,000 through the Growing Suburbs Fund and Mitchell Shire Council contributing $354,000.

A COSTLY DECISION

A Beveridge man was fined $2127.40 in Seymour Magistrates' Court recently for illegally dumping a trailer load of waste on Old Sydney Road.

On 3 November 2020, Council’s CCTV cameras captured a vehicle with a trailer stopping on Old Sydney Road. Two men got out of the vehicle and unloaded the rubbish on the side of road before driving away.

The Beveridge man, who didn’t appear in court, was found guilty of aggravated littering, failure to respond to request for information and failure to remove litter when directed and was fined $2127.40.

To report illegally dumped waste please use the Report an Issue online form, phone Council on 5734 6200 or contact the EPA’s 24-hour pollution hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC).

VOLUNTEER WEEK 17 to 23 May 2021

Recognise, Reconnect, Reimagine is the theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week and there has never been a more fitting time to say thanks to the hundreds of volunteers across the municipality for their tireless work.

The strength of Mitchell Shire’s volunteer network came to the fore during the COVID-19 lockdowns, with volunteer groups across Mitchell mobilising to respond to community needs.

Emerging from last year’s lockdowns, volunteer groups across have sprung into action however, many have reported a shortage of new volunteers to replace those retiring.

With support from the Victorian Government, we've launched a one-stop-shop website to help potential volunteers find local opportunities.

CARVING NEW SKILLS Chainsaw crew put through paces

Mitchell Shire’s inaugural chainsaw crew have been shown the dos and don’ts of safely and effectively using a chainsaw.

The three-day course aimed to give women living in small communities of Mitchell the skills and confidence to operate a chainsaw to clear fallen timber or complete fire season preparations.

The program, delivered through Victorian Government funding, also encourages social interaction and the development of long-term friendships.

We partnered with Clonbinane Community Action Group and the Reedy Creek Progress Association to deliver the chainsaw operation and maintenance course, plus first aid, through DNA Training Solutions.
