Understanding Your Perennials

Do you find yourself sometimes feeling impatient with your perennials' performance, especially in their first year? Understanding the "sleep, creep, leap" cycle of some perennials can significantly improve not only your gardening success, but your patience as well.

Here are a few houseplant hints for winter:

  • Most plants don't require as much water in winter, so check moisture before watering.
  • Fertilizing in winter isn't necessary. Wait until you see new growth (usually around March).
  • Protect plants from cold drafts and heating vents.
  • Don't allow foliage to touch windows—especially if outside temps are freezing.

Happy gardening!
