Hitman animals, the story of Zimbabwe's 500,000,000,000% inflation rate, Disney movies explained in TIFU form, and users's all-time favorite reddit posts, a Brett Favre commemoration, and more. |
This week is going to be the 10-year anniversary of reddit. Yep, a decade has passed since Steve Huffman and I first showed reddit.com to the world. And in that time, users have created almost 200 million posts and 28 billion comments.
What an amazing ride it’s been. Thank you for making it everything it is. Thanks to more than 16 billion of your upvotes over the last ten years, the world can enjoy rare NASA memorabilia from the 3rd man walking on the moon, witness hermit crabs exchanging shells, interact with a North Korean defector, hear Channing Tatum’s thoughts on Jupiter Ascending (we love him for such an authentic AMA), and laugh at trees sucking on things.
This week we also tracked down the elusive Warlizard for an in-depth interview on our podcast
about his life and famed gaming forum.
And this was just a small part of the stuff you have missed on reddit this week, so let’s carry on with the latest edition of Upvoted Weekly! Oh, and if you haven’t yet, PLEASE add upvotedweekly@reddit.com to your contacts!
VeryLittle explores exactly how you and everyone else would die based on two different black hole hypotheticals.
Somehow I’m not that surprised that the large majority of these hitmanimals are cats, whether they’re making it look like a training accident, disposing of the body, or even going after other cats. Thankfully there’s also a fearless bunny with a personal vendetta against the cats. And what about this dolphin taking out the sky ambassador??

Dogs don’t recognize their owners as captors. If aliens “owned” humans in an analogous way, they would have to control our lives in such a manner that we couldn’t recognize that the relationship was that of ownership. |
How do you deal with the matter of reproductive rights? Are the aliens nice enough to allow humans to have children or will everyone they take be sterilized? |
Other than the fine vs. gross motor skills, I’d say societal pressure adds a lot. There is still a lot of traditions-pressure on women—you have to “act ladylike,” including having a pretty handwriting, an appreciation for art, etc.—it’s part of being poised and graceful in our culture. |
You should really check out all the rest. The simplicity and sophistication of the Tatooine one is probably my favorite.
The results include the laziest military officer ever, a guy with ninja photo-taking skills, someone who got his balls stuck in a plastic chair, advice on grief, a reddit story that is now being made into a movie, awkward sex stories, and more.
Ready to do even more time traveling? Here’s more of what happened in history this last week:
800 years ago: The Magna Carta, the first known written document setting down human rights, was signed.
200 years ago: Napoleon was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo.
20 years ago: OJ Simpson famously tried on the leather gloves linked to the murder he is on trial for, telling the jury, “They don’t fit.”
10 years ago: TIME magazine claimed Americans are “gaga over real estate.”
I can’t think of a more gratifying moment in my life since Simba killed Scar and avenged Mufasa’s death to take over Pride Rock. |
Now the entire town is in danger of the infestation, the kid can’t leave because there’s no records of her due to the fake mayor, and my job/home is in danger of being shut down. What should I do, Reddit? |
You’d think that would be the end of it, but a week later the beggar returns masquerading as “Prince Ali of Ababwa.” … I could see the writing on the wall. The throne would pass from the Sultan to his self absorbed daughter and this common criminal. Admittedly, I lost my temper. |
Ever heard the story of how Zimbabwe created a 500,000,000,000% inflation rate (yes, that’s the right number of zeros) until $35,000,000,000,000,000 (yes, also the right number of zeros) was actually equal to just $1? It’s pretty fascinating.
