Director's Update

Welcome to the November issues of the N8 newsletter.

The last few months have been a bit of a transition for the N8 with both Peter and Laura departing for new roles at the Medicines Discovery Catapult and the Great Exhibition of the North, however we are now pleased to announce Dr Annette Bramley has been recruited to the post of Director and will be starting in January.

Annette is of the parish of EPSRC and over her 18 years there has held a number of positions including most recently Head of Healthcare Technologies, where she has helped to galvanise multi-disciplinary research collaborations, lead change management projects relating to grant management and IT and managed a wide range of programmes, projects and portfolios.

In addition, to her professional skills, Annette will bring a touch of creativity to the N8 office through her skills as an artist and student at the Royal School of Needlework – with her work exhibited at the Royal School and in galleries nationally.

Annette said: “My love for both the arts and the sciences are one of the reasons that I am so passionate about multidisciplinary research and bringing people together to address real world challenges.”

In events outside the N8 office we are pleased to note that the North is once again strongly represented in the latest round of Science and Innovation Audits (SIAs) that were announced by the Government recently.  These SIAs are a process by which government is encouraging regions to identify and explore industrial areas where they are globally competitive.

The N8 Policing Innovation Forum was held in Manchester on 2nd November and saw academics, policing professionals, and case practitioners come together to explore methods for developing Early Interventions in a number of settings, from preventing football disorder to ensuring innovative pathways for helping minors steer clear of criminality.

Of course, there is lots more going on in the N8 – some of which you can read below – and we are always interested in hearing about new collaborative opportunities!  Read the newsletter, get involved, and get in touch.
