Click here Vol 25 No 06 11 Oct 2019 Junior Certificate ResultsLast week pupils, parents, and teachers waited expectantly for the arrival of Junior Certificate results. The excitement was palpable and was soon replaced with joy and relief. Congratulations to our pupils who did wonderfully well in the examinations and who deserve to be very proud of themselves. Well done too to the teachers and parents who helped our pupils every step of the way. HSD Feis Ceoil ConcertLast weekend pupils from The High School Orchestra travelled to Cork to participate in a special concert. The Young Platform concert was held at the Curtis Auditorium and featured performances by winners of the 2019 Feis Ceoil. Orchestras, choirs, and soloists provided hours of entertainment. The talented leader of the HSD Orchestra, Clara Lee, enthralled the audience with a memorable solo performance. It was a wonderful day filled with music and song. Our pupils look forward to their next performance at the annual Prize Distribution at The High School in a few weeks time. All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey ChampionshipCongratulations to the Senior 1 boys' hockey team who will be competing in the All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship for the fifth successive year. On Wednesday 23 October The High School will play against Newtown School at 1.30pm at The High School. We will face Methodist College, Belfast on Thursday 24 October at St Andrew's College and Banbridge Academy the same afternoon at The High School. We warmly congratulate the hockey Senior 1st XI team on the significance of its achievements to date. We wish all members of the squad every success in the forthcoming tournament. HSD PA Form 4 EventMany thanks to The High School Parents' Association for organising an exciting event for our Form 4 pupils last week. They arranged for pupils in Form 4 to celebrate receiving their Junior Certificate results by spending the afternoon paintballing. Pupils find the group activity very enjoyable and it helps focus their energy and attention on this special day in a fun, safe environment. Thanks to all those who helped make this event such a successful, positive experience for Form 4 pupils. Rags to BagsThose of you who attended our recent 'Bright Futures' Open Evening event at The High School may have noticed the beautiful Rags to Bags display in the Home Economics Department. The bags were made by Form 1 Home Economics pupils for their summer examination last year. This project introduced pupils to upcycling old fabrics in a creative way. We made the bags as part of our textile projects by measuring out the size of material we wanted then used a combination of hand and machine sewing to complete the bag. It was so much fun to customise the items with embroidery, pockets, and straps. We completed 20 bags in total. It was a very enjoyable part of our summer examinations. History in the ClassroomHistory pupils were treated to a visit to their class by HSD Archivist Mr Phelan last week. He brought with him old documents and ledgers from the Archive. It is wonderful that our pupils can have such easy access to primary sources. The Archive contains numerous important documents, none more so - it could be argued - than the school records of Nobel prize-winning poet, William Butler Yeats. (HSD, 1881-83). If you would like to contact the Archivist you can do so by clicking here. HSD SwimmingSwimming is a great way to stay fit, make new friends, and promote positive mental health. Each Tuesday at Terenure College Swimming Pool pupils from The High School come together for a fun swim. Juniors take to the pool from 6.00-6.45 pm while Seniors attend from 6.45-7.30 pm. All are very welcome to join us. Tatler Women of the YearCongratulations to past pupil Rachel Lyons (HSD, 2001-06) - second from the right below - and her band Pillow Queens who were named Tatler Ireland Women of the Year at the weekend. The band are currently on tour in Ireland and the UK, Europe, and America. We wish our past pupil every success in the future. Dates for your Diary
