New Town Retail Precinct UpgradeNovember updateWork is scheduled to commence on the New Town retail precinct upgrade in February 2019. The upgrade along New Town Road between Pirie Street and Risdon Road has been divided into three stages (see image below). The City's design team is close to finalising the plans and detailed design for stage one of the retail precinct upgrade. Final plans will be provided to the community and presented at a pre-construction community meeting early next year. At the pre-construction meeting residents and businesses will be invited to join the conversation about what project delivery will look like in New Town. This will be a good opportunity to consider the impact and implications of work and allow you to ask the project manager and manager of civil works any project related questions. Current workPrior to December, kerb lines at the intersection of Pirie Street and New Town Road will be marked out with paint and guide posts to assist the City of Hobart with the detailed design of the road crossing. The guide posts will remain in place until the kerbs are constructed. Project ManagementSarah Bendeich has been project managing the planning stage of the New Town retail precinct upgrade but as the project moves into delivery mode, Stephen Dickinson is the new key contact for all project enquiries. Stephen has led preliminary work, testing for services and investigating upgrade sites. He has been walking around New Town, talking to impacted residents and businesses and is happy to speak with the community about the work ahead. BackgroundPlaning for the new streetscape has been based on input from and collaboration with the community in an extensive community engagement process. The City of Hobart invited the New Town community to participate in a series of engagement activities, including a street party, surveys, forum, project action team workshops and an open house event. Recommendations were made by the project action team. Community engagement on this project attracted attention from the International Association of Public Participation and the City of Hobart was listed as a finalist in their 2018 Core Values Awards.
