10 Tips for Making Your Holidays a Little Happier

For many people, the month of December brings to mind sparkly holiday parties, boisterous family gatherings, and general good cheer and fun.

For others, however, December can be an especially difficult time of the year as they watch everyone else seemingly enjoying the holiday season together while they feel isolated and lonely.

Together in Wellness: The Tripartite Committee on First Nations Health Annual Report

The Tripartite Committee on First Nations Health (TCFNH) annual report has been released, which covers an extended period from November 2017 to March 2019. 

The report describes and celebrates the remarkable achievements of regional and community partners who have been instrumental in driving these TCFNH strategic priorities:

• Cultural Safety and Humility
• Mental Health and Wellness
• First Nations Primary Health Care
• Implementation of the Indigenous Cancer Strategy
• Maternal-Child Health Services and Infant Mortality

BC Patient Safety & Quality Council Signs Declaration of Commitment to Cultural Safety

The BC Patient Safety & Quality Council and the First Nations Health Authority and have signed a Declaration of Commitment to Cultural Safety and Humility for First Nations People in BC.

The BC Patient Safety & Quality Council provides system-wide leadership to ensure that each British Columbian receives high-quality, person-centred care.

What Caring Means through Culture and Connection at the Nursing Education Forum

Elder Alice Gus, from Tsawaysia, Squamish Nation, and Cheryl Bailey, FNHA Administrative Assistant, Office of the Chief Nursing Officer, open the forum.

The 2019 Nursing Education Forum (NEF) brought FNHA community health nurses and band-hired community nurses who serve BC First Nations communities together to share, re-energize and enhance their knowledge and skills.

The FNHA hosts the annual forum in support and recognition of the positive impact of nursing services in communities. This year's forum took place in Surrey, BC, last month and had a record attendance of over 250 point-of-care nurses from community.

Heart Health and Wellness at the 2019 Nursing Education Forum

Encompassing FNHA’s shared values and directives, the theme for the 2019 Nursing Education Forum (NEF) was Care, Culture and Connection, which was carefully woven into all presentations and workshops for the event.

Dr. Jeff Reading, PhD, and the FNHA Chair in Heart Health and Wellness at St. Paul’s Hospital, shared his presentation "Heart Health and Two-eyed Seeing". He began his talk by recognizing all the nurses and their work, saying, “You are in the trenches . . . improving the lives of First Nations people in BC.”

Northern Leadership Gather for Northern Regional Health Assembly

Two days of discussion and information sharing were held for First Nations leadership in Prince George. The event included updates from the FNHA Board and Executive team, information on the opioid crisis, and cultural sharing from the region.

Northern First Nations Health Partnership Committee Communique

Members of the Northern First Nations Health Partnership Committee (NFNHPC) met on Lheidli T’enneh territory November 26, 2019, with representatives from First Nations communities, the First Nations Health Council, the First Nations Health Directors’ Association, the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and Northern Health (NH). The committee discussed a range of topics from ambulance services to remote communities, and from funding for land-based healing, to nurse practitioner supports.

World AIDS Day 2019: Let’s talk about sexual wellness and HIV/AIDS

A mesage from Dr. Helena Swinkels, Senior Medical Officer, FNHA.

Dec. 1 was World AIDS Day, an opportune time for all of us to unite against HIV infection, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. It’s also a good time to talk about the essential role communities, including First Nations communities, play in combatting stigma and supporting those living with HIV and AIDS.
