MEDIA RELEASE: New model of care supports individuals with severe mental illness in central and eastern Sydney
An additional 20,000 occasions of care will be provided to more than 2,400 people living with severe mental illness in central and eastern Sydney over the next two years under the Severe Mental Illness Primary Care Supports (SMIPCS) Program. Following a competitive tender process, Central and Eastern Sydney PHN is pleased to award $4.4 million of Commonwealth funding to One Door Mental Health to deliver the SMIPCS Program, which will operate in accordance with the

Important seasonal influenza update – Influenza cases higher than predicted peak
Seasonal influenza activity is continuing to rise above its predicted peak and NSW Health is reporting that it is expected to remain high for the coming weeks. Hospitals are seeing increasing presentations of influenza-like symptoms to emergency departments and admissions for pneumonia remain high. Cases are more severe and numbers are trending upward faster than anticipated. General practitioners are asked to encourage patients to try and manage their symptoms at home and not attend emergency unless they are very unwell or have co-morbidities. NSW Health also request GPs to check the vaccination status of patients, particularly the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. Further

Education opportunity - Stepped Care and eMH in General Practice
In partnership with the Black Dog Institute, we will be hosting three workshops across our region on Stepped Care and eMH in General Practice. In the two hour workshop participants will be introduced to the concept of stepped care in mental health, specifically in the context of the way mental health problems present and are managed in primary care. The history and thinking behind the development of the stepped care model will be discussed, as well as the advantages of the approach for the patient and the mental health system generally. Expressions of interest invited for Giving Asthma Support to Patients (GASP) Program
The Asthma Foundation of Queensland and New South Wales (AFQN) is facilitating a three-day intensive asthma education training course, commencing this month, to accredit nurses to be GASP program participants. When: 29 August 2017, 30 August 2017 and 19 September 2017
Where: Illawarra Shoalhaven Education Centre, 42 Loftus Street, Wollongong, 2500 (AFQN will consider supporting the travel and associated costs of participating nurses)

Free of charge Nurses will be provided with relevant asthma patient education and course materials and will have ongoing access to a specialist GASP nurse to support the implementation of asthma clinics in their practice. Free Fibroscan available for your hepatitis patients
A community nurse consultant from the Liver Clinic will come to your practice and fibroscan your hepatitis B/ C patients. The nurse will provide GPs with a full analysis and has links with the local gastroenterologist/ hepatologist. The Royal Australian and New Zealand Collage of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists - New research suggesting vitamin B3 can prevent miscarriage and fetal abnormality should be taken with caution
Research from the Victor Chang Institute suggesting that increased uptake of vitamin B3 during pregnancy can prevent miscarriage and birth defects could promote false hope among millions of families worldwide who are facing these challenges. The institute has hailed this finding as “one of the greatest discoveries in pregnancy research” however without further controlled studies, this claim has the potential to do more harm than good. From Couples to Parents is a successful parenting program which recognises the big lifestyle changes that occur once children arrive and provides help, information and time to reflect on this important transition. The session will be held on Saturday 2 September 2017 at Drummoyne Community Centre and is for couples expecting their first child. It will: - cover local services for new parents

- offer the chance to meet other local first time 'parents to be'.
