Spotlight: Crime and Intervention
Refuge: A Social Return on Investment EvaluationRefuge’s network of services operates nationally across 53 local authority boroughs and district and county councils, and includes more than 40 refuges. Refuge also runs independent domestic violence advocacy services; culturally-specific services – including programmes for Vietnamese women and Eastern European women ; community outreach programmes; and single-point-of-access services – which act as the first point of contact for anybody experiencing gender-based violence across the whole of a local authority area. The National Domestic Violence
Helpline is run by Refuge in partnership with Women’s Aid and receives more than 200 calls every day. In addition, Refuge runs award winning pro bono prevention and awareness raising campaigns.
St Giles Trust Creating social value and building social capitalSt Giles Trust is a charity which aims to break the cycle of prison, crime and disadvantage. It offers a range of services, both in prison and in the community, which aim to help the 16,000 clients they work with each year overcome any barriers which might be holding them back from moving their lives forward in a positive way. St Giles Trust stands out by placing prisoners and ex-offenders at the heart of the solution, engaging them to advise their peers while simultaneously providing them with
training.
Barnardo’s interventions for young people who have been sexually exploitedStatistical methods were employed to measure the effect of Barnardo’s interventions on the severity of sexual exploitation and its associated risk factors. The cost of sexual exploitation was estimated for varying degrees of severity using a range of secondary sources. These estimates were then combined to calculate the gross financial benefit of the intervention, and compared to the cost of the intervention to give an overall fiscal rate of return. This research highlights the benefits to the taxpayer of Barnardo’s
interventions for young people who have been sexually exploited substantially outweigh the costs, with a potential saving of either £6 or £12 for every £1 spent depending on the assumptions made, in addition to a substantial (non-costed) reduction in the risk of sexual exploitation.

Why we should audit impact reportsAre claims made in social impact measurement reports accurate? Someone should check, says our CEO Jeremy Nicholls. After all, investors receive independently audited financial reports. Why shouldn’t beneficiaries receive the same? Read more in our blog for Pioneers Post.
SVI and NCP Linkages Paper Approaches to understanding and valuing social and environmental value have evolved considerably in recent years. Two principal frameworks are Social Value International’s Social Value Framework, which primarily focuses on social value, and the Natural Capital Coalition’s Protocol, which primarily focuses on natural capital. By understanding these two approaches and how they relate to one another, users can more easily understand how to
use them together to account for the changes that matter.

The difference in healthy life expectancy between those living in the least and most deprived areas of the UK is 19 years. These widespread and consistent health inequalities are often determined by stark social and economic inequality. Only about 10% of what makes us healthy is related to access to health care services. Social determinants—such as housing, education, friends and
communities, family, employment and our surroundings—are increasingly recognised as the most important drivers of health outcomes and life expectancy. Find out more with this event from NPC.

The initiative is part of a wider effort to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. See more. The SVA Fundamentals for Impact are grounded on the collective experience of many global practitioners and experts, international academic evidence on what effective funders and social purpose organisations look like and SVA’s own experience in Australia over 15 years. Developed specifically for the social sector, the SVA Fundamentals for Impact are differentiated from other organisational effectiveness tools.
