Fiordland events Birds Bats and Banana Splits - FULLY BOOKED Come and meet the Eglinton Valley bat monitoring team and learn about the amazing creatures they work with. Share a banana split as the sun sets and then head into the forest to discover the creatures of the night! When: Friday 26 January, 7:30pm - 12:00am World Wetlands Day Celebration - CANCELLED Sadly the World Wetlands Day celebration planned for Saturday 27 January has had to be cancelled due to the extremely dry conditions, which will hinder the success of the planting bee. The Waiau Fisheries and Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Trust and DOC will revisit holding this event later in the year. The Rakatu Wetlands are open to the public all year round - visitors are very welcome. Summer talks Earthquakes in the South Island When: Friday 26 January, 7pm Fiordland Kiwi Diaries Public Talk When: Wednesday 28 February, 7pm (Not January as previously advertised) Waitangi Day talks - 6 February 2018 A fully packed day of events is planned in celebration of our National Day, starting with a Ceremony at the Te Anau DOC Visitor Centre grounds from 9am. As part of the festivities we are hosting the following talks: Historical Te Anau walk/talk with DOC Ranger Ken Bradley Save the Kea Conservation talk with Tamsin Walker Resolving the Manapouri /Te Anau Lakes controversy of 1959-72 ('Save Manapouri') and recent 'Save Fiordland', with Sir/Prof Alan Mark. Breakfast with the Birds Hear about takahē conservation work and spend time with these iconic birds. Other residents include kākā, kākāriki, ducks, and ruru. Come along for this unique opportunity to meet some of New Zealand's rarest birds. When: Everyday (including weekends) 9:30am - 10:30am Where: Meet by the takahē enclosure at Punanga Manu o Te Anau /Te Anau Bird Sanctuary Cost: Gold coin donation appreciated |
