Nau mai, hoki mai, welcome back to another year of education newsletters from DOC!

This first edition is focusing on planning for your teacher-only day.

  • What can you share, to encourage each other to teach outdoors?
  • What goals can you set as a team?
  • What stories can you share to inspire teaching in nature?

As always, please don't hesitate to contact us if you require any advice, or have any feedback about this newsletter or our resources. We would love to hear from you!

Teacher-only day: nature take-over!

Step 1 - Inspiration

Everyone loves sitting back and watching a video - right?

This video aims to inspire schools to start their outdoor learning journey. See if you can get time to share this video with your colleagues and senior leaders at your teacher-only day.

Get it on the agenda!

Benefits of nature

Step 2 - Stepping-stones

You've watched the video? Time to try it out for real!

Using one of the six nature taster activity cards - get outdoors with your colleagues and senior leaders.  Trying it out together is safe, fun and builds confidence in teaching outdoors!

Can't fit it into the planning day agenda? - these activities are perfect as a warm up or ice-breaker activity, a mid-morning break with coffee or at lunch time with cake ;)

Step 3 - Goal-setting

Inspired - Check

Tried it out  - Check

Now - set a goal to do it again!

Setting simple goals for you and your team can be a great way to bring colleagues along the nature journey with you. Similar to that step count on your fit bit - encourage each other and work together to reach your goals.

Ideas for goals:

  • Walk with your class to your local green space (e.g. school grounds or nearby park) and experience a different learning space
  • Try out one or all of the nature taster cards with your class this term.
  • Plan a learning adventure outside this term.
  • Share one outdoor experience with your team / senior leadership group.

Step 4 - Send us your goal and be in to win a prize!

Let us know your goal, your teams goal or your schools outdoor goals for term 1.

Whether it's to go on a weekly walk outside, try out one of the nature taster cards or start a nature inquiry - we want to know!

Tell us your goal and be in to win a New Zealand Nature Heroes book for your class!
