Opportunities & Threats in the Use of Cyber Data in Todays’ World

Learn about how data analytics are used creatively to achieve competitive advantage in several business examples and how Interpol is working with the international business community to protect societies and companies against cybercrime. Two leading experts talk from their respective angle and expertise on the subject of the use of data analysis and cyber security.

This masterclass is given by:

Ms. Michelle Cheong, Associate Professor of Information Systems at SMU and
Mr. Timo Kansil, Assistant Director Executive Office INTERPOL Global Complex for Innovation.

Michelle Cheong is currently an Associate Professor of Information Systems (Practice) at the School of Information Systems (SIS) at Singapore Management University (SMU). She is also the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Professional Education at SIS where she is in charge of the Master of IT in Business (MITB) programme and Continuing Education & Training. She leads a team to convert the MITB programme to blended learning, and has been actively engaged in blended learning design and delivery of courses herself.

Prior to joining SMU, she had 8 years of industry experience leading teams to develop complex IT systems which were implemented enterprise-wide covering business functions from sales to engineering, inventory management, planning, production, and distribution.

Upon obtaining her Ph.D. degree in Operations Management, she joined SMU in 2005 where she teaches the Business Modeling with Spreadsheets course at the undergraduate level and is the co-author of the book of the same name. She also teaches in several different master programmes at SMU on different variants of spreadsheet modeling courses covering different domains, including financial modeling, innovation modeling and IT project management. She also designed and delivered the Operations Analytics & Applications course for the Master of IT in Business (Analytics) programme at SIS.

Michelle has won several awards including the Most Promising Teacher Award in 2007, the Postgraduate Professional Programme Development Award in 2013, and the Best Associate Professor of Practice Award in 2014, all from the SMU Center for Teaching Excellence. In addition, she also bagged the inaugural Teradata University Network (TUN) Teaching Innovation Award 2013, which recognizes excellence in the teaching of Business Intelligence and Business Analytics at the undergraduate, graduate and/or executive education levels.

Timo Kansil serves at INTERPOL in the capacity of Assistant Director of the Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI). The IGCI is based in Singapore and is INTERPOL’s newly opened executive directorate that deals with cybercrime, capacity building and innovation. Timo Kansil is seconded to INTERPOL by the National Police of The Netherlands.

Before coming to Singapore he served as Head of International Cooperation of the Netherlands National Police. The first one to hold this position, he assisted the National Commissioner in bringing into effect the new strategy on international cooperation. 

Previous he served as Head of Strategy and Policy at the National Police Agency, holding responsibility for national and international information exchange and strategic intelligence; as Chief of Staff to the Chief Commissioner entrusted with the Netherlands EU presidency in 2004; and as senior advisor at the Dutch Ministry of the Interior.

Timo Kansil holds a Master’s degree in Political Science from the UvA University of Amsterdam and has received executive education at international schools including Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government. He was a visiting fellow at The Netherlands School for Public Administration, is the author of several scientific publications and conducts trainings and lectures at renowned institutions.

SMU Administration Building, 81 Victoria Street (corner with Bras Basah Road).

The nearest MRT station is Bras Basah (circle line). Walk towards Exit A. Take the escalator up to the ground level. Turn right (you will see “SMU Administration Building” Sign) once you reach the ground level. They are located next to NTUC Income Centre.

By car/taxi: from Bras Basah Road, turn left to Queen Street, immediately turn right. There is a sheltered drop-off point at SMU Administration Building. The carpark is at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

How to register:
Kindly let us know in time if you cannot make it. As discussed at the AGM we may give a penalty (SGD 10) in case a member registers for this event but does not attend without prior cancellation.
