This is a photograph of the main library's new art installation, Crisis Phone 2020. It is an interactive art piece that utilizes recovered and restored urban artifacts in public spaces.

Crisis Phone 2020: a community conversation
The Main Library is featuring a temporary art installation that reflects on the current drug crisis and the impact it is having on our community.

Crisis Phone 2020 is an interactive art piece by visual artist Mike Salisbury that utilizes recovered and restored urban artifacts in public spaces. This abandoned phone booth is part memorial, part community conversation and social commentary. It provides an opportunity for grieving and remembrance while fostering a dialogue around addiction and recovery.

The attached phone book will start off blank. The public is encouraged to contribute words and drawings to this social experiment and group art project. The once empty directory becomes part of the collective journey and experience of addiction and recovery, hope, and despair in our community.

Wellington-Guelph Drug Strategy (WGDS) Manager Adrienne Crowder shares, “The tragic loss of life that we have seen in Guelph and Wellington County from opioid poisoning reflects a complex mix of variables. The WGDS is grateful to Mike Salisbury and the Library for bringing this issue to our community in an engaging and interactive way. The Crisis Phone 2020 symbolizes the current challenges we face in addressing the fact that deadly and toxic drugs are circulating in our community. It's time to call for collective action! As more people understand the problems that people with substance dependencies encounter and the actions we can take to improve this situation, the faster we will see changes for the better.”

Be part of this community conversation. Share your thoughts in the phone book of this interactive art installation.
