The EMBARK conference in Auckland on the 24th of July coincides with the first anniversary of the formation of the Climate Leaders Coalition (CLC). The CLC has also just met an important milestone, celebrating their 100th signatory. In the low emissions vehicle space, EVworld is coming up in August. We are currently considering applications from businesses for our latest Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund (LEVCF) funding round, and we are also proud to announce an exciting new contestable fund for electric ferries - details below. The Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards will be held on 21 August this year. Congratulations to the finalists announced this week, including Fonterra, Red Stag and Spark, in the Large Energy User Initiative of the Year, sponsored by EECA Business. Please let us know if you have any suggestions or feedback on our newsletters, we like to hear your views! Watercare making waves with their environmental gainsRoseline Klein and the team at Watercare have been making big gains in reducing their energy related carbon emissions. Roseline won the Energy Leadership Award at EECA's Large Energy Users Forum last year for her part in leading Auckland's Watercare towards more sustainable energy practices, and now the team is doing more than ever to reduce its impact on the environment, including installing solar panels at three sites, electrifying their vehicle fleet, and breeding bacteria which will save energy in the wastewater treatment process. Continous Commissioning saves DHB 30% of Superclinics total energy useCounties Manukau Health (CMH) has slashed nearly a third of the energy used at one of its biggest clinics, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in operational costs per year. This included halving the energy use of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system by continuously improving how the system is run, to ensure it runs as efficiently as possible and only when needed – a practice known as ‘continuous commissioning’. The DHB’s project was supported by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), which has funding available to help reduce energy use across public sector agencies. There is significant potential in the health sector to reduce carbon and save money through a focus on energy management. Embark conference - 24th July AucklandBrought to you by the Sustainable Business Council together with the Climate Leaders Coalition, EECA, Ministry for the Environment, and WWF New Zealand, the aim of EMBARK is to provide attendees with the building blocks of a great low emission transition plan, and to connect them with people who can help them turn their plan into a reality. The conference will be held at SKYCITY Auckland on July 24 and is designed to help businesses learn practical ways to reduce their emissions. It will see those already on a low emissions journey share what they have learnt to help others with their own progress. The morning’s sessions will see speakers from the Climate Leaders Coalition, including Air New Zealand, NZ Post, Westpac, Z Energy, The Warehouse Group, SKYCITY, Ports of Auckland, Meridian, and Fonterra talk about what they have done to reduce their emissions. They will also share practical tips to empower businesses to draw up their transition plans, measure their carbon footprints, set an emissions reduction target and finance it. The afternoon’s facilitated sessions will give businesses the opportunity to meet some of the providers of low emissions products and services who can help them make it happen. This includes consultancies, manufacturers of technologies and other solution providers. They’ll also benefit from hearing from businesses about what’s challenging about transitioning so they can figure out ways to help. Representatives from other sectors are welcome, including government and community and interest groups who want to hear what businesses are doing to tackle climate change. Some will have a role to play to remove barriers, while others are part of the larger conversation about climate action in New Zealand.
