WALLAN TOWN HEART COMING TO LIFE

All traders open for business

The $4.1 million Wallan Town Heart project is coming along well with a number of elements completed or almost complete.

Changes to the service road near the plaza and 25 additional car parks in Bentinck Street near the Community Bank® Adventure Playground have now been complete.

Works around the Free Library and War Memorial area are also nearly complete, with the new cenotaph area and flagpoles finished in time for ANZAC Day and the Circle of Remembrance coming along well with bluestone paving and lighting expected to be installed shortly.

Works on the new town square will begin soon including paving, seating, landscaping and lighting, with works on the new signalised pedestrian crossing expected to start over the next month.

As work continues on the Wallan Town Heart Project, it's important to remember that all traders are open for business, with pedestrian access to the shops on-going throughout the project.

KILMORE STREET LIGHT UPGRADE New lights with a heritage touch

The old light fittings on the heritage street lights along Sydney Street Kilmore are being replaced with new LED fittings.

Unfortunately, the old fittings were no longer safe and were not able to be maintained.

The new lights will be colour-matched to the heritage street poles. They will be brighter which will improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles. The LED style lights are also cheaper to run and are better for the environment.

There will be some minor disruptions while the works are underway.

Tallarook Mechanics Institute update

The iconic Tallarook Mechanics Institute was destroyed by fire earlier this month. Sadly, the hall has been demolished.

Council is working with the Committee of Management and the community to support the rebuild which will be funded through insurance and a generous contribution of up to $200,000 from the Victorian Government thanks to Jaclyn Symes MP. The committee is also exploring fundraising opportunities.

Thank you to everyone who showed their support for the Tallarook community after the fire and for everyone who shared their memories of the hall on our Facebook page.

We're still in the very early stages of discussing rebuilding options but we are interested in your initial ideas. We've set up a project page on our Engaging Mitchell website where you can share your ideas. You can also sign up for updates or put your hand up to be part of the rebuilding committee.

The next community meeting will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 29 May at the Tallarook  Recreation Reserve Pavilion (Sanctuary Road). All welcome.

Tallarook Farmers Market - Sunday 3 June

The hall might be gone, but the Tallarook Farmers Market is still going strong.

Thanks to a huge effort from the market organisers and stallholders, the May market went ahead the day after the fire in a new location on Railway Place (just near the CWA Park).

The market will be back stronger than ever in June taking place in the same location from 9am to 1pm on Sunday 3 June.

Make sure you get along and check out all the great local produce and handmade gifts.
