Optrafair attracts 7,122 visitors
7,122 visitors attended Optrafair at Birmingham NEC (1-3 April). The show was a great success for ABDO with its CET sessions being very well attended. As well as the ABDO CET Theatre, the Association Lounge and ABDO College / ABDO College Bookshop stand were also busy throughout the show.

Optrafair has been running since 1978, it's owned by the FMO (Federation of Manufacturing Opticians), the trade body for the optical industry, and has been managed since 2016 by Mark Allen Exhibitions. This year's show featured a bar celebrating the FMO's centenary. 76 per cent of exhibitors have already rebooked for next year's show.

Bryony Pawinska, FMO chief executive, said “This was the first Optrafair show for which Mark Allen Exhibitions had a full year's planning cycle, having taken on the event management mid-way through planning for the 2016 show, and I am delighted at the vibrancy of the new show format. The centenary bar area worked particularly well as a busy central focus and comments from exhibitors and visitors alike have been overwhelmingly positive, with huge loyalty to Optrafair as the sector's own show and praise for the professionalism of the Mark Allen team. The exceptional rebooking numbers reflect exhibitors' satisfaction with the revolutionised Optrafair."

Optrafair 2018 will be held 14-16 April

Boots Opticians communication to optometrists – delisting of Protect Plus Blue

ABDO was approached by members immediately after Boots Opticians issued its advice to optometrists regarding the delisting of Protect Plus Blue.

The issue was discussed at length at the ABDO board meeting on Thursday 6 April. Subsequently Mrs Fiona Anderson, President of ABDO, wrote to Boots Opticians outlining our concerns about the contents of that advice.

We are awaiting a response to our concerns and it would not be appropriate to comment further until a reply has been received.

However, members should be reassured that the ABDO board takes its responsibilities very seriously indeed in the question of protecting the professional integrity and the legal status of our members.
