Finished Wilderness Axe

During this intensive three day workshop at Alex’s forge in Somerset you’ll make your own wilderness axe, fit an ash handle and then learn how to use it safely and efficiently, culminating in making all the components of a fire from one log.

Alex travelled to Sweden in 2014 to learn axe making at Gransfors Bruks, the world renowned axe making factory.  Here he discovered a love of these tools and has spent the following years honing his skills and perfecting his style.

Alex Pole - blacksmith

You will spend the first two days of the workshop with Alex learning how to forge a single piece hatchet style axe head.  After hardening, tempering and grinding you will fit an ash handle and your axe will be ready to use.

Day three will be spent with me learning how to use the axe safely and efficiently, cutting, splitting and carving green and seasoned wood to make various bush crafts (ash mallet, tent pegs, spatula) as well as transforming a seasoned log into all the individual components needed to create fire using just one match.
