Hello  ACORNS subscriber

There has been a lot of IFACCA activity recently, so this week we are making it all about the Federation!

Last week, the Board gathered in Buenos Aires for its 47th Meeting, which was generously hosted by the Ministry of Culture of Argentina and organised by board member Iván Petrella, Secretary for Federal Integration and International Cooperation at the Ministry. The Board covered a full agenda; discussed future plans for the organisation; and confirmed details for the 8th World Summit on Arts and Culture. A formal agreement between IFACCA and the hosts, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture's National Department of Culture and the Arts (JKKN), Malaysia was signed and we can now confirm that the Summit will take place on 11-14 March 2019, in Kuala Lumpur. We are also pleased to announce that IFACCA has been admitted to official partnership with UNESCO as an NGO with consultative status.

The Board Meeting was the final meeting for Dr Elise Huffer, Adviser to the Human Development Programme of The Pacific Community, Fiji, who has served on the Board since October 2011. On behalf of the Federation, we extend our great thanks for her support and contributions to IFACCA over those years.

In membership news, we warmly welcome two new Affiliate Members to the Federation: Kultura Nova Foundation (Croatia), which provides professional and financial support to civil society organizations in the fields of contemporary arts and culture; and City of Melbourne (Australia), which fosters creative experimentation by encouraging and funding artists, promoting participation and bringing art and people together.

We are also pleased to release the final version of D’Art 51: Local Cultural Policies and National Frameworks, our recent collaboration with the Culture Committee of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).

Finally, in Secretariat news, today the team farewells its Communications and Project Coordinator, Meredith Okell. If you or your organisation need to contact us about anything communications-related, please get in touch via our info@ifacca.org address and another member of the team will be pleased to help. As always, if you have news that you would like us to share, please contact us at news@ifacca.org.

IFACCA admitted as an official NGO partner of UNESCO

UNESCO has approved IFACCA as an official NGO partner with consultative status. In her letter to IFACCA, the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, noted that cooperation between UNESCO and IFACCA has a solid foundation based on many areas of common interest, synergies and previous collaborations. The partnership will allow IFACCA to provide input to UNESCO’s General Conference as observers, receive invitations to Committee sessions, meetings and consultations, and will facilitate regular exchange of information between the two organisations. In May, IFACCA’s Executive Director, Sarah Gardner, will attend the UNESCO NGO Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, held in partnership with the Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Foundation.

The urgency of art in a dangerous, rapidly changing world
Chicago Tribune, 10 April 2017, USA

Art is not a luxury, not an adornment of civilization. It is a necessity. It is one of the central purposes of civilization. Artists lead in ways politicians, chief executives, or generals cannot. They enable us to explore the mysterious - deep within us and all around us. They find the universal within the quotidian and in what has never before been imagined - the links that bind us to one another in the most profound ways.
