New Summer Positions Available: Florida Everglades work with Dr. Durland Fish  Four summer research internship positions are available for a continuing project designed to determine the distribution of mosquito species and mosquito-borne viruses occurring in the Florida Everlgandes, and to evaluate their potential impact upon wildlife and human health.  The project will also provide baseline data for assessing the impact of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and regional climate change.  Candidates should have previous field experience and basic knowledge of entomology and/or field ecology.  Fieldwork involves setting up and maintaining light-traps in representative dominant ecosystems within Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve and other natural areas.  Laboratory work includes sorting and identifying mosquito species, and preserving material for arbovirus assays.  Training in mosquito identification will be provided.  This is a cooperative project with the Program in EcoEpidemiology at Yale School of Public Health, Center for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases at University of Texas Medical Branch, and the Office of Public Health, National Park Service.  Interns will be provided with housing, laboratory space and field transportation for three months (June-­‐August).

DEADLINE TODAY: Call for Nominations - Sustainability Awards  Do you know students doing outstanding work in the field of sustainability? On Earth Day, April 22, the Office of Sustainability will honor outstanding student, faculty, and staff contributions to sustainability at Yale. Nominations for award recipients can be submitted on the sustainability website. The deadline to submit nominations is Monday, April 6, 5:00 PM EST.

DUS Office Hours  Paul Sabin, EVST Director of Undergraduate Studies, will hold open office hours Thursdays from 1:30-4:00pm in HGS 2677.  Students who wish to discuss the Environmental Studies major (or other topics) are welcome to drop in.  To get to HGS 2677, walk through the metal gates of HGS, and turn left into a small courtyard.  Go into Entryway A on your left. Professor Sabin's office is on the first floor to the left.

NYC Conservation Corps Recruiting for 2015 - 2016  The NYC Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking motivated and energetic applicants to become the next generation of leaders dedicated to public service and to protecting and enhancing New York City’s parks and natural resources.

The NYC Parks Fellowship and Conservation Corps Program is a paid 40-week public service commitment that features professional placements throughout a diverse and dynamic city agency, as well as an ongoing seminar series with career
development opportunities and service projects.

EPA Fellowships Available - Apply by May 19 - Up to $50K over 2 years!  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships program, is offering undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. The deadline for receipt of applications is May 19, 2015, at 11:59:59 PM ET.  Subject to availability of funding and other applicable considerations, the Agency plans to award approximately 34 new fellowships.  Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $20,700 per academic year of support and $8,600 of support for a three-month summer internship.

Maine Conservation Corps Positions Available The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is seeking applicants for the Field Team and Environmental Steward Programs.  As part of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, the MCC's four-fold mission is to: accomplish conservation projects, create conservation employment, provide conservation education and engage conservation volunteers.

Field Teams with the Maine Conservation Corps are composed of three to six members, serving to construct and improve recreational trails in the mountains, along the beautiful coastline and in communities all over the state of Maine.

Environmental Stewards bring expertise and focused effort toward creating and improving sustainable recreational trails, planning conservation projects as well as developing, training and building a sustainable community volunteer base.

The MCC is accepting applications for Environmental Stewards and Field Team Members until positions are filled.  Start dates for the programs are May 11th and May 18th, respectively.

Summer Institute on Sustainability & Energy - Univ of Illinois at Chicago - August 6-18, 2015  Our office would like to invite students to apply to our 5th annual Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy to be held August 6-18 in Chicago.  All applicants accepted into the program receive lodging support for the duration of the 2-week program. Many will receive partial support for travel costs.

We are now accepting applications and will continue to do so until July 1.  We welcome all graduate students and senior-level undergraduates from all academic disciplines to apply. Job Opening: Global Scholars Fellow for the Yale Young Global Scholars Program  The Yale Young Global Scholars Program is an academic enrichment and leadership training initiative at Yale for talented high school students from around the world, who apply through a competitive application to study on the Yale campus in the summer. The Global Scholars Fellow will:

  • Analyze data (marketing, admissions, and program reviews)
  • Advise the YYGS leadership team on program content throughout the year, to include personal teaching in the summer sessions depending on interest and availability
  • Draft and disseminate program materials on the YYGS website and in social media
  • Review applications of high school students from around the world applying to YYGS, to include participating on the admissions committee and making admissions decisions
  • Recruit and interview undergraduate and graduate students to serve as summer instructors in YYGS, organize their training, and help review their proposed teaching curricula
  • Develop the YYGS alumni network online and organize an inaugural alumni conference for past YYGS participants in fall 2016
  • Coordinate logistics for up to six two-week YYGS sessions on Yale’s campus during the summer, to include liaising with Yale Conferences & Events and YYGS summer staff
  • Assist the YYGS leadership team with the administration of the summer program, to include developing the program schedule and a staff rotation to ensure full coverage of teaching content and supervision of participants
  • Manage communication with prospective applicants and their parents through email, phone, and website; and develop programming for the summer residential life part of YYGS, to include mentorship sessions and other structured activities available on Yale’s campus for participants

Qualifications:

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelors Degree, knowledge of Drupal,  website design, and social media communication
  • Experience working with and/or teaching high school students
  • Experience organizing conferences at Yale
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of working with number and basic-level statistics

Preferred education and experience:

  • Recent Yale College Graduate
  • BA in a field relevant to the academic content of YYGS, to include the social sciences, humanities, or science, technology, and medicine (STEM) fields
