Extended Services for Contact Lens Opticians: England

ABDO had produced a guide for members entitled ‘Extended Services for Contact Lens Opticians: England’.

The Assocation urges CLOs to get involved; to view the guide click here.

Child Safeguarding – Level 2

Around 17 per cent of ABDO members have now completed the Child Safeguarding course and received their Level 2 Certificates. Completion of this will give you a recognised qualification once you have passed. These could be displayed in your practice.

This course has been written and funded by ABDO exclusively for its DO members and externally accredited. It has been CET-approved for 1 point: C-50012 for dispensing opticians.

Dispensing opticians (DOs) are the only professional group which has a specific competency for paediatric dispensing. For that reason, and to satisfy local and national protocols, the dispensing optician must have, as well as the GOC-regulated elements of this competency, a qualification relating to the safeguarding of children.

There is a wealth of resources dedicated to child safeguarding. In the compiling of this training course, materials and references provided by a number of safeguarding organisations and charities have been combined, as well as referencing UK government guidelines.

The course consists of three modules, each composed of three parts. The total time to complete the course is approximately two hours, but you can return to the course and it will resume where you left it. There is a final assessment, and on satisfactory completion of the assessment you will be able to print a personalised Level 2 child safeguarding certificate as evidence of your completion. The course will be updated regularly, and you should recomplete the course as refresher training every three years as a minimum.

The course can be accessed via the ABDO website once you have logged in. Just click on CET on the left hand side of the screen and select Child Safeguarding from the list below.

Donate online and double your Christmas gift to Vision Aid Overseas between 28 Nov – 5 Dec
Will you help make double the difference this Christmas by supporting Vision Aid Overseas to continue its programme in Sierra Leone?

Vision Aid Overseas urgently needs help so that they can continue to work in Sierra Leone, where the Vision Aid Overseas Supported Vision Centres and trained eye care workers are the only providers of affordable eye care services and spectacles for a population of 1.6 million people in the Eastern province.

"Despite being rich in natural resources, Sierra Leone is one of the world’s poorest countries with only two qualified optometrists and six Vision Centres in the public sector serving the country’s population of over 7 million people. The donations raised will enable Vision Aid Overseas to strengthen three Vision Centres in the Eastern Province, provide ten optometry technicians with training and support outreach services to the more isolated communities", said Anne Buglass, director of programmes.

To help Vision Aid Overseas continue its work in Sierra Leone, they have been selected to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign starting at midday on “Giving Tuesday” 28 November 2017 and ending midday 5 December 2017.

During the 7-day giving window, Vision Aid Overseas has the opportunity to double the £19,525 pledged by their supporters in August to £39,050 online by 5th December. The donations raised online will give Vision Aid Overseas a huge boost towards raising the £75,000 needed to continue their work in Sierra Leone. So, please donate online and make your donation go twice as far.

Every £5 you give can turn into £10! That’s one eye test and a pair of glasses to two eye tests and two pairs of glasses.

To donate click here (Don’t forget, donations will only get doubled between Midday Tuesday 28th November until Midday Tuesday 5 December 2017).
