Welcome to Global Connections
 

Welcome to the first edition of Global Connections. This newsletter will provide a quarterly update from the University of Wollongong, with a focus on our international activities.

Collaboration with partners across the globe is a big part of who we are at the University of Wollongong. Our connections span 200 universities in 35 countries, and we are proud to have 143 nationalities represented at UOW.

I encourage you to read on, and contact us with your feedback - we are always happy to hear from you. If you’d like to know more about our work, the UOW International website is also a good place to explore.

Latest world rankings success
 

The University of Wollongong has made one of the biggest jumps among the world’s universities in the QS World University Rankings capping off a month of significant ranking successes for UOW. The 2015 QS World University Rankings saw UOW surge from its 2014 ranking of 283rd to 243rd - a rise of 40 places representing one of the biggest improvements of any university.

UOW joins Global Partnership
 

The University of Wollongong has accepted an invitation to join the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) as the Australasian member. The UGPN was formed in 2011 and sets out to create opportunities for international collaboration enabling academics and students to work together on issues of global importance.

Partner Day 2016
 

UOW is hosting its inaugural Partner Day on Thursday 25 February 2016, timed to suit those attending the 2016 APAIE Conference in Melbourne.

If you are in Melbourne, we also welcome the opportunity to meet with you one-on-one at the University of Wollongong booth during the APAIE Conference from Tuesday 1 – Thursday 3 March.

40 years of Research and Innovation
 

The University of Wollongong is celebrating 40 years of research innovation and success and making a significant impact globally. From the discovery of a new human species, the development of next generation condoms and the world’s first bionic bra to exciting new treatments for cancer, UOW research is transitioning Wollongong from a manufacturing hub into a knowledge economy.

New Colombo Plan funding announcement
 

The Australian Federal Government has announced significant funding of $683,000, which will allow 165 University of Wollongong students to experience study opportunities in the Indo-Pacific region under the New Colombo Plan. Students will have the opportunity to undertake projects in China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

UOW signs on with prestigious Japanese Research Group
 

UOW’s Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM) and the National Institute for Materials Sciences (NIMS) formalised their existing partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 29. The two-decade-long partnership between researchers at UOW and NIMS is furthering materials for sustainable energy and development. The research collaboration was established more than 20 years ago.

Expanding Singaporean connection
 

UOW has enjoyed a partnership with Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) for more than a decade in the areas of computer science and IT and more recently in psychology. UOW has been working with SIM Global since 2005 and has graduated more than 2,500 students. UOW is examining the possibility of expanding its program offerings into niche areas aligned with industry and government priorities in Singapore.

INTI International University Study Tour at UOW Campus
 

A group of Malaysian students studying UOW courses at INTI International University and College in Subang Jaya spent a week attending lectures and cultural events during a study tour at the University recently. More than 1200 students are currently undertaking UOW degrees in Malaysian thanks to UOW’s partnership with INTI International University and Colleges.
