Resilient Northridge: A Plan for a Better Community & Campus

Resilient Northridge: A Plan for a Better Community & Campus is the outcome of much work by the California State University, Northridge Master of Urban Planning students to increase local resiliency and is part of the Climate Resilience in Urban Campuses + Communities (CRUX) initiative. The plan was developed over two semesters as part of the master students’ professional project. They chose and identified 15 indicators from the 100 Resilient Cities program that are most critical to the Northridge neighborhoods and the campus.

This briefing paper by the Intentional Endowment Network focuses on solar energy and how to most effectively enable endowments to make investments in solar projects, and the solar energy market as a whole. It provides guidance on three main approaches endowments can utilize to invest in solar. Universities may use their operating budget to procure solar power from a third-party owned solar project, however that is not covered in this paper, which is focused on endowment investment in solar.

Resilience Bootcamp – Turning Threats into Opportunities
|
Resilience is a hot topic for those who work within the campus operational and built environment. This workshop will be hosted by Second Nature on Tuesday, October 2 at AASHE, and is designed to complement Second Nature’s “Organizing a Campus-Community Resilience Building Workshop.” The workshop will provide guidance on sustainable best practices in the planning and design phase of the project as well as a means of evaluating completed projects.

Climate Resilient Urban Campuses and Communities: Final Showcase in Portland

Throughout the day, the interest and excitement among participants was palpable, and the ideas generated spilled over to a happy hour in downtown Portland. For everyone involved in the CRUX project, this was just the beginning of partnerships.
On July 9, 2018 Climate Resilient Urban Campuses and Communities (CRUX) Portland hosted an end-of-grant showcase of the resilience work achieved over the past two years. Phoenix CRUX Fellow Brian Grant and Second Nature Innovative Services Manager Ruby Woodside flew in to join Portland participants from Portland State University (PSU), Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC), and Portland Community College in touring MHCC’s natural areas and hearing about research and partnerships in resilience at PSU.
