Vacancy for the role of ABDO Examinations Support Officer

Main duties and responsibilities

The post holder will report directly to the director of professional examinations.

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Helping to maintain the standards ABDO professional qualifications and examinations
  • Supporting the introduction and management of any changes to the syllabus as directed by the director and assistant director of professional examinations and liaising with any associated parties where required
  • Providing technical support to the director and assistant director of professional examinations.
  • Monitoring and assessing of related qualifications for exemption and entry purposes
  • Delivering presentations to students and potentially supporting ABDO regional events
  • Liaising with the other ophthalmic professional bodies and regulatory bodies, such as the GOC and Ofqual when required

Duties related to the examinations themselves will involve:

  • Assisting in the training and monitoring of all examiners (Principal, Theory, Practical and Probationer) including the provision of examiner guidance, assessment feedback, organisation of regular update meetings and training sessions/courses.
  • Assisting in the preparation of theory examinations for all qualifications:
    - liaising with internal and external moderators on training issues
    - recruitment of new markers and arranging training events
  • Assisting in the preparation of practical examinations for all qualifications:
    - operational factors
    - equipment
    - standard operating procedures

NB The list of duties is not designed to be exhaustive and can be varied in consultation with the post holder in order to reflect changes in the role or organisation.

Working hours and length of contract
The appointment will be a permanent 0.6 post and flexibility of working hours may be required occasionally.

It is a requirement for the post holder to be based in Birmingham to assist with training, theory and practical examinations. There would be some travel expected, for example, overseas examinations, conferences and institute visits.

The salary will be £30K pro rata.

Applicant Requirements
The post holder must be a registered dispensing optician, qualified for more than five years, who ideally holds one or more of the Association’s post fellowship qualifications or the BSc (Hons) in Optical Dispensing Studies. It is essential that the post holder can demonstrate experience in the fields of training and assessment.

In addition, the following would be advantageous:

  • Practical examiner for the past five years
  • Undergone management training
  • Computer literate in word-processing, spreadsheets and presentation programmes
  • Experience in competency frameworks and their implementation
