October is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month

Babies are sacred gifts from the Creator, precious blessings entrusted to our care and protection. Every year in BC, healthy babies unexpectedly die in their sleep – including our own First Nations and Aboriginal babies.

This tragic occurrence is known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and it is the most common cause of death in babies between one month and 12 months of age, even though it is rare. The exact causes of SIDS are still unknown, but there are ways to protect against the risk.

The First Nations Health Authority envisions healthy, self-determining and vibrant BC First Nations children, families and communities playing an active role in decision-making regarding their personal and collective wellness. In line with Directive 1 - Community-Driven, Nation-Based, the FNHA is encouraging First​ Nations to create their own health event or initiative again this winter!

The FNHA is pleased to share that the Regional Early Childhood, Education, and Employment Survey (FNREEES) National Report has been released and can be found here. 

The FNREEES preliminary report will be sent to all communities in the next month and a final Provincial Report is anticipated for release in early 2017. Also, the first stage of data collection for the Regional Health Survey (RHS) wrapped up at the end of September 2016, with over 3700 surveys completed in 63 communities!

With the completion of the first stage of RHS data collection, and the progression of the FNREEES reporting process, we conclude ‘Research Rounds: Surveys’ with this sixth and final installment summarizing survey content and potential data usage.

The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council is pleased to announce the launch of its 2016 Regional Engagement Process. The process involves a series of six regional meetings held throughout the month of November. 

This year's Regional Engagement Meetings will also feature an awards ceremony/dinner to announce and recognize the youth athlete recipients of the 2016 Regional Premier's Award for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport. Dates and locations:

Free Aboriginal Youth Conference hosted at Victoria Native Friendship Centre November 25-26.

The Youth Department at The Victoria Native Friendship Centre is hosting an LGBTQ2 Aboriginal Youth Conference called 'Two Spirits, One Heart, One Mind, One Nation' on November 25 and 26, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Conference will be held at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre, 231 Regina Avenue.

It is welcome to youth ages 12-24. There will be prizes, games, and Aboriginal speakers. Lunch and transportation will be provided.
